J. BRYA 1\1.v HOOP AND HANDLE FASTENER.
` No. 506,190. .1 y Patented oet.' s, 1893.
NrrED STATES l JOHN BRYAN, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO HENRY WIMBERG AND JOHN EGLI, OF SAME PLACE.
HOOP AND HANDLE FAST-ENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,190, dated October 3, 1893.
Application tiled June 30, 1893. Serial No. 79,298. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BRYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoop and Handle Fasteners;v
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for attaching handles to tubs, buckets and vessels of similar construction in which the elements are bound together by hoops, and which require or are provided with side handles to facilitate the handling of the same.
The object of the invention is to iix the hoops in a relative position and prevent their slipping on the vessel and at the same time afford a ready and convenient means for securing the handles in place.
The improvement consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aside elevation of a tub embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section of a tub on the line X X of Fig. l looking to the left, showing the means for attaching the handles to the tub and fastening the hoops in place in full line.
The tub A is of ordinary construction and represents the class of vessels to which the invention is especially designed.
B and C represent the top and bottom hoop respectively. These hoops are formed from strips of galvanized iron so as not to be inj uriously affected by oxidizing influences.
The means for attaching the handles D to the tub and at the same time relatively fixing the position of the hoops Band C, consists of strips of galvanized iron E. These strips have one end recurved to form hooksbwhich engage with the lower hoop, the strip passing over the said hoop and the hookb embracing the lower edge thereof. Aportion of the opposite end of the strip is folded on itself 5o and embraces the handle D in the fold or bight and is adapted to pass between the sides of the tub and the upper hoop, the end of the folded portion being turned up over the lower edge of the hoop B to form the hook e which engages with the upper hoop and` prevents the same from slipping down. These strips are secured to the sides of the tub by a barbed tack F, or other suitable fastening, which is driven through an opening in the strip into the side of the tub. This construction causes the strain to come directly upon the hoops when lifting the tubs from place to place, the barbed tack or fastening F serving simply to tix the position of the strips and prevent their accidental displacement. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a vessel having top and bottom hoops, of strips having hooks b at their lower ends to embrace the lower edgeof the bottom hoop, and having the upper end folded and passed between the side of the vessel and the top hoop, and having the lower end of the said folded portion bent upward to embrace the lower edge of the said top hoop, and handles held in the fold or bight of the folded portion of the strips, substantially as described.
2.`The combination with a vessel having top and bottom hoops, and side handles, of strips having their lower ends bent to embrace the lower edges of thebottom hoop, and having their upper end portions folded to encircle-the handles and pass between the side of the vessel and the top hoop, and having the lower end portion bent to embrace the lower edge of the top hoop, and a fastening to secure the said strips to the vessel, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BRYAN.
