UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
MARSHALL E. HUBBARD, OF MEDINA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO EBER HUBBARD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2192,1701, dated February 25, 1879; application filed July 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, h/IARSHALL E. Hun- BARI), of Medina, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckets or Pails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved water or other bucket. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of one of the hoops.
The same part in the several figures is designated by the same letter.
This invention appertains to certain improvements in water or other buckets of that kind made from a paper prepared for the purpose; and it consists in the particular con struction of the hoops, by which a greater thickness is obtained at the upper and lower edges of the buckets, the said pointsstrengthenegl, the body of the bucket covered at these points, the ears for the bail or handle made with the hoop, and the bucket fnrtherstrengthened at the lower end, where it is confined to its bottom part, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, A refers to the pail or bucket, which is made from a paper prepared chemically for the purpose. B refers to its ball or handle, made of wire metal and in the usual way.
0 Care the hoops or hands, made of sheet or hoop metal, and preferably galvanized, and riveted or otherwise secured together at their respective ends, which overlap each other. These hoops are secured upon the bucket, one at its lower end, and so as to fit thereon opposite where the bottom abuts or fits against its sides, thus streiiigthening this point, and aiding in securing the bottom thereto. The body of each hoop=is corrugated or beaded, as at d, to give it additional strength, and the upper one is formed at its upper edge with an outwardly-projecting portion, 0, also extending upwardly within a short distance of the upper portion of the body of the bucket, and thence bent inwardly or flanged horizontally, as at c, which flange fits on the said edge of bucket.
From this construction, it will be seen that an additional thickness and strength will be imparted to that edge of the bucket or pail, enabling it to be made of thinner or lighter paper, to effect a saving in material and the expense of manufacturing the same, in addt tion to providing a lighter bucket, which is a very material consideration.
Besides these advantages, the flange of the hoop which covers the upper edge of the bucket or pail protectsthat part thereof where, unprotected, it is very liable to become broken or ragged fromuse or wear.
The lower loop is similarly extended outwardly and inwardly at its lower edge, as at c c, as the upper hoop, and'fits upon the lower edge of the bucket, to protect and strengthen the same. The said hoop is also beaded, as at d, the same as the other hoop, for further strengthening the hoop and bucket. These hoops are easily struck up by machinery adapted for the purpose by a continuous operation. The upper one, when struck up, is bulged and strengthened, as at d d, where itis also perforated, which perforated bulging portions form the ears for the bail or handle B. The ears and hoop are all in one piece, which simplifies construction and lessens expense and labor. I
Having thus fully described my improvement, I claim and desire to secure by Letters" Patent of the United States In a pail or bucket, A, the hoop 0, extended from a point a short distance below its upper edge outwardly, thence upwardly, diverging from the pail or bucket, and thence inwardly, as at c c, to fit upon the upper edge of pail, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth. I
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my own 1 have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARSHALL E. HUBBARD.
