EMANUEL ETTENHEIMER, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN STAMPING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PAlL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,082, dated April 6, 1897.
A li tio filed November 17, 1896. Serialll'o. 612,441. (No model.)
In all 10. mm it 712031] concern/.
Be it known that I, EMANUEL ETTENHEIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pails, of which the following is a specification.
My improved pail is mainly of sheet metal. I fortify it with thicker metal peculiarly arranged, and the improvement contributes to the strength and durability of the construction.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and represent what I con- I 5 sider the best means of carrying out the invention.
Figure 1 is a general perspective View, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section at the mid-height. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2, but with the bail raised. Fig. is a corresponding central vertical section at right angles to that in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a bottom view. Fig. 6 is a bottom view showing a modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts 111 all the figures where they appear.
A is the sheet-iron or low steel, which forms the main portion of the body.
0 B is the bottom, having concentric corrugations to stiffen and strengthen it and united to the'lower edge of the body by folding in a long-approved manner. Strips of thickeriron D D extend up and down the depth of the 5 body, hook under the bottom rim, and extend across under the bottom, as indicated by D*, the bands being accurately formed in the correct position in advance by hand or by machinery and applied after the sheet metal has 40 been shaped and properly held in place. There may be any number of these strengthening-strips D, extending up and down on the outer surface of the pail with the hooks D in each at the required points and the portions 5 D crossing each other near the center of the bottom. I have shown four.
The sheet metal A of the sides of the pail may be made in a number of separate pieces, so as to utilize portions which are left as waste from other manufactures. I have shown it as formed of two pieces joined at a a by rivets O. The joints thus formed extend up and down the body on two opposite sides, and two of the strips D are located to coincide therewith. The rivets O extend through two thick- 5 5 nesses of the sheet metal A at each joint a and also through the adjacent strip D and confine the three parts firmly. The upper ends of the reinforcing-strips D, connecting with these joints a, are offset outward, as shown at D and thence extended upward and rounded, as indicated at D and punched, as indicated by d, to receive the loop E of the bail-wire E.
The upper edge A of. the body is formed by curling or rolling. The curl incloses a stiffening wire F, making it substantial. The olfset D near the upper end of each strip D abuts against the under side of the curl A. The rivets O, which join the edges of the sheet metal A along the lines a, serve also to firmly attach the adjacent strips D.
The iron strips D other than those which are extended outward and upward to form ears simply abut their upper ends against the under side of the curl or roll A.
Modifications may be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the ad vantages of the invention.
I have in my experiments made the whole of black iron or low steel and coated the complete pail with zinc by the dipping process, technically known as galvanizing. I prefer to do this for the reason, among others, that the zinc fills the small spaces under the strips and strengthens the construction. The metal may be previously galvanized. I can make the crossportions D of the strengthening-strips distinct from the portions D and D. Fig. 6 shows such a construction.
I claim as my invention 1. In ametal pail, the combination with the body and bottom presenting a base-flange, of strips extending vertically along the body and having hooked portions D, defending, 5
strengthening and clamping the bottom rim, substantially as herein specified.
2. In ametal pail, the combination with the body and bottom presenting a base-flange, of strips extending vertically along the body and having hooked portions D, clamping the bottom rim, the bottom being reinforced by cross-bars D, substantially as herein specifled.
8. In a metal pail, the combination with the bottom, of the body having the curl A at the top, arfd presenting the base-rim, strips extending vertically along the body having a bearing against the curl A and having lower hooked portions D, clamping the bottom rim, substantially as herein specified.
4:. In a metal pailthe combination with the bottom, of the body presenting the base-rim, strips extending vertically along the body above the same and perforated to constitute bail-ears, and having lower hooked portions D clamping the bottom rim, substantially as herein specified.
