ROOF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,244, dated March 17, 1891.
Application filed September 20,1890. $erial No. 365,592. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.- 7
Be it known that we, ROBERT P. LAMONT and EDMOND D. BRONNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of YVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roofs; and we declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
Our invention relates more particularly to the supporting and joining together of the roof-plates of a car or other structure, whereby there are no orifices or joints exposed on the uppersurface of the roof; and it consists in a combination of devices and appliances hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of the roof of a car, and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the roof-plates.
In carrying out the invention, A represents one of the members or beams of the roof to which the roofplates are directly engaged and by which they are sustained. These members or beams are a peculiar shape, being substantially a T shape in cross-section, with the flanges a a curved or rounded downward. The plates 13 are made of sheet metal and corrugated, as at b, to strengthen them. The edge of each plate which is attached to the cross-beam A is shaped as shown in Fig. 2, with a corrugation or ridge 1) and the de- This depending web or flange is provided with bolt-orifices b 0 is a packing, of tar-rope, rubber, or the like, placed between the corrugation b and the flanges a a of the cross-beam, thus making a perfectly-tight joint.
D is a bolt passed through the depending flanges b of the two top plates 13 and through the web a of the cross-beams, thus binding all three parts together and making a joint without a bolt or bolt-orifice being exposed on the surface of the roof. By this construction the ordinary batten now employed to cover the joints between the plates is dispensed with, and the peculiar form of the cross-beam not only renders the batten unnecessary, but it cheapens and strengthens the construction, and also, as above set forth, makes a joint without a break in the upper surface.
We do not confine ourselves to curving the flanges a as shown, for obviously they can be otherwise shaped to house the ridged and flanged edges of the roof-plates.
What we claim is 1. In a metallic-roof structure, the combination, with the roof-plates, each having a ridge or corrugation b and dependent flange 6 of the cross-beam formed with the upright web a and flanges a a, the flanges Z1 of two adjacent plates being engaged to the web a, substantially as described.
2. In a metallic-roof structure, the combination, with two adjoining roof-plates provided at their edges with ridges or corrugations 1) and depending flanges W, of the crossbeam for supporting and engaging said plates, said beam having a Web a, to which the depending flanges of the plates are engaged by a through-bolt, and having also the flanges a a, which project over and cover the corrugations 1), substantially as described.
3. In a roof structure, the combination of the cross-beam formed with the upright web a and flanges a a, the roof-plates B, provided adjacent to the edge with the corrugation b and depending flange Z2 a suitable packing O, placed between the corrugations 1) and flanges a, and a bolt passed through the flanges b and web a, for securing the parts together, substantially as described.
4. In a roof structure, the combination of a supporting member comprising a vertical web a and overhanging flanges a with metallic roofing-plates extending under the flanges and provided at their edges with flanges which are attached to the web, sub stantially as described.
In testimony whereof we sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
