Description
H. W. SMITH.
SHEET-METAL ROOFING.
No.188,, 079.- Patented March 6,1877.
WlTNSSES: I IN ENTOB: @239; h/M, wyim momma N PETERS, PHDYDLITHOGRAPNER. WASHINGTON. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HENRY W. SMITH, OF WAYNESBURG, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND THOMAS C. SNYDER, OF SAME PLACE. I
IMPROVEMENT IN SHEET-METAL ROOFING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,079, dated March 6, 1877; application filed December 230, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. SMITH, of Waynesburg, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Sheet-Metal Roof, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of one of the seams. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line w w in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
.The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawing, A A, &c., are sheets of metal forming the covering of the roof, and the edges of the same are turned upward at right angles, forming flanges a b, the flange 0t being wider than 12', and hemmed or turned upon itself at c.
The sheets are placed upon the roof, so that the wide edge of one sheet is in contact with the narrow edge or flange of the adjoining sheet and an anchor, 11, consisting of a piece of sheet metal nailed to the roof-boards, and extending upward between the edges of the sheets composing the roof, is divided centrally from its upper end downward to the narrower flange b, forming the parts 0 f. The part c is bent over the flange b, and the part f extends upward, and is received by the hem c, and is bent with the flange a over the flange b, when the sheets A are locked together.
The anchors may be placed as near together as may be required for the security of the roof.
The advantages of my improvement are obvious. The roofing is held securely without driving nails through the sheets of metal composing the same. The peculiar form of the seam permits of expansion or contraction without injury to the roof. It is inexpensive in its manufacture and application.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In sheet-metal roofs, the sheets A having flanges a b of unequal width, and the wider turned at c, in combination with anchor (1, having divisions c f, the one, 0, bent over flange b, and the other, f, bent with flange a, over flange b, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
HENRY W. SMITH.
