IMPROVEMENT IN SWINGS.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LEWIS F. Non, of 25 Delaney street, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Swings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of a swing hung in a doorway, constructed according' to my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the swing closed or folded together for convenience in carrying or storage.

My invention consists in a novel construction of a swing with a folding seat, whereby when in use the seat is prevented from tipping over, and when not in use it may be folded vary compactly for trasportation or storage.

Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in both of the gures.

To enable others skilled in the art to construct and apply my invention, I proceed to describe it, having reference to the drawings.

Two pendent ropes, A A, each provided with a suspending hook, a, upon its upper end, are rmly secured to a seat-bottom, B, one at each corner thereof, either by passing the ends of said ropes through holes in the bottom, as shown in the drawings, and securing said ends by a knot, or by means of ahook attached to the pendant and an eye fastened to the bottom B. There are secured to each pendent rope two oblique brace-ropes, C and D, the rope C being secured to the pendent rope at c, and running to the rear corner at the some side of the bottom B, where it is secured in the same manner as the pendent rope A, and the rope D being secured to the pendent rope at d, a short distance above c, and extending to the back E 'of the seat, and secured to the upper corner thereof. The back E is also provided with a waistband, F, secured to one side thereof, and sufficiently long to go around the waist otthe child or other person sitting in the swing,and provided with a hook, e, or similar device to fasten it to the other side, to which is attached astationary oriiXed eye, to receive the said hook. The back E is hinged at h h to the rear edge of the bottom B, so that the two can be folded together, as shown in Fig. 2, with the several ropes between them.

When the swing is suspended by the hooks a a, no matter in which position the person may sit, it is impossible for the seat to tip over. It' he throws his entire weight on the front portion of the bottom B, the whole support will be by means of the pendent ropes A A; but if he sits farther back, a portion of the weight will be received bythe brace-rope O C, and by them transmitted to the parts of the pendent ropes above; or it' he leans backward against the back E, a portion ot' the weight will be transmitted to the upper portion of the pendent ropes by brace-ropes D, which will prevent the seat from tipping over in a backward direction. The waistband will prevent falling out in a forward direction. The swing is therefore perfectly safe for youn g children.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A swing with the bottom and back of the seat hinged together, and with pendent ropes A and brace-ropes G D, arranged and connected with each other and with the bottom and back of the seat, substantially as herein specified.
