CHILDS SWINGING- CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 26, 1910.
Application filed August 9, 1909. Serial No. 511,859.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER C. BENNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Swinging Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to swinging chairs of that class which are intended for children, and which are designed to be suspended in a doorway or from the ceiling by ropes.
The objects of the invention are to produce a chair swing of this class, which when not in use and for transportation may be folded into a compact state, and which does not require the adjustment of any bolts, screws or nuts to set it up.
Another object attained is the novel attachment of the ropes to effect the balance of the swing, and to suspend the swing by a single rope upon a side, thus allowing of easy adjustment in the length of the ropes.
Still another object is to produce a swing of this class which has very few parts consistent with stability and comfort.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views; but it is fully understood that while I have herewith described my invention as herewith illustrated, I do not confine myself to the exact design as shown, as slight changes may be made in the construction and combination of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings -Figure 1, is a side elevation of the device set up. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same folded. Fig. 3, is a perspective View of the swing set up. Fig. 4:, is a detail view of the rope-joining,
Referring to the drawings, 1, indicates a seat having its front and rear ends attached to the transverse supports 2, and 3, which supports are further joined together and strengthened by the rods 4; while upon the upper surface of the support 3, is secured the riser 5, to the ends of which are hinged the back members G. Said back members 6, are joined together by the back stays 7, to which are attached the back 8.
a To the back members (5, above the lower stay 7, are hinged the rear ends of the arms 9; while the forward ends of said arms 9, are joined together by the cross-rod 10, and the tray 11., which is secured thereto, thus making the arms rigid with reference to each other.
Hingeably connecting the forward ends of the arms 9, to the ends of the transverse supports 2, are the links 12,
The balancing ropes are passed through the vertical holes 14, in the arms 9, and the supports 2, and 3, and have their ends oined together by the clamps 15, and the ball 16, at a suitable point above the arms; while extending upward from the ball 16, is the suspending rope 17, which is provided at its end with the adjusting member 18, having the transverse hole 19, in the end thereof, adapted to be slid upon said rope 17; while the loop thus formed is passed through one end of the spring 20, which is designed to be secured where it is desired to suspend the swing.
By the novel construction of the swing it will be noted that the same may be folded into the compact condition as shown in Fig. 2, when not in use and to facilitate packing.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A` swinging chair, comprising a seat, transverse supports secured to said seat, rods joining said supports under said seat, a riser secured upon the upper surface of one of said supports, back members hinged to said riser, transverse rods joining said back members, a back secured upon said rods, arms having their rear ends hinged to said back members, a transverse rod joining the forward ends of said arms, a tray secured to the under side of said arms adjacent to said rod, links having their upper ends hinged to said arms near the outer end thereof and their lower ends hinged to the ends of the forward transverse support, balancing ropes upper end thereof and a coiled spring attaohed to said loop, for the purpose of sus- 10 pending said swing.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HOMER C. BENNER.
