Description

UNITED STNrnsN PATENT OFFICEci VILLIAM RANSVEILER, OF AKRON, OHIO.
BABY-JUMPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,096. dated December 20, 1887.
Application filed April 1887. Serial No. 234,140. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM RANswnrLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby-Jumpers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, strong, and durable babyjumper which can be easily adjusted to suit a reclining or sitting position, so that the occupant can be made to sit upright orto lie down'full length; and a further object is to so construct the device that it can be easily knocked down and packed in a very small space for shipping purposes.
To this end my invention consists in the peculiar construction and combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view-of my complete device; Fig. 2, a view showing the device knocked down and ready for shipment, and Fig. 3 a detail view of the back and adjustingclamps.
The let-ter a represents the seat of the chair, having upon either side thereof a pair of longitudinal side bars, b, connected together by lateral girders c, upon which the seat c rests. The armrests d are supported upon transverse spokes e, the opposite ends cf which are removably fit-ted within the sockets f, and the sides thus formed are rigidly bound together by stay-rods g, which pass transversely through v the front and rear ends of the arm-rests and side bars. The upper ends of these stay-rods are provided with eyes h, adapted to receive the supporting-ropes i.
The adjustable back consists of a board or suitablebearing-piece, j, held between the free ends 0f the pivoted arms K by means of the screws Z and flanges m. In order to hold the back at any desired angle, Iprovide each arm with apair of clamping-disks, N N. The disk N is made integral with the pivoted end of the arms K and surrounds the head of the pivot O, which head is countersunk in the outer face of the disk N, and the opposite engaging-face of this disk is provided with au embossment, p, which fits within a corresponding depression in the opposite engaging-face of the stationary disk N', and this disk is rigidly secured to one of the rear spokes, c, by means of atransverse concavity, q, within which the spoke fits, andis thereby'prevented from turning with the opposite disk, N, during the adjusting operation. The pivot O passes transverselythrough the center of both the disks N N and spoke c, the end which projects beyond the spoke being provided with a thumbnut, e', by means of which the disks are clamped and unclarnped. A piece of flexible material, fr, is stretched across the back between the back-piece j and seat a to form a soft support.
for the lower part of the childs back.
s is a pivoted foot-rest, rigidly secured to a roclrshaft, t, journaled in sockets or bearings t in the ends of the side bars, b, and it is held in raised adjustment by means of cords U, fastened to the eyes 7L of the forward stay-rods, g, and the free end of the foot-rest. Besides supporting the rest, these cords also assist in keeping the child from falling out, and a hinged foot-board, V, which projects upward from the free end of the foot-rest, still further serves to keep the child within the jumper. l
The suspending-ropes i each consists of a single continuous piece, each serving to support one side of the chair. The manner in which I prefer to arrange these ropes so that their length may be varied as occasion demands may be described as follows: One end of the rope is first made lfast to the ring W. The rope then extends down through the eye h of the stay-rod g, thence upward through the same ring, around which it is given one wrap, and on through an eye in one end of the swivelarm y, to which it is -fastened by'a slip-moose. From this point it passes down through another ring, W, and is given one wrap around this ring like the other, and it then passes on down through the eye of the stay-bolt and up back to the ring, to which it is fastened. The arm y is swiveled to the lower end of the coi1 spring Z by the swivel y', by means of which the ropes and springl are prevented from twisting. The upper end of the spring Z is provided with a loop, by means of whichit is hung upon any suitable pendant.
The construction of my device having been ICO set forth, I will now proceed to describe its operation. When it is desired to have the child kept in a sitting posture, the device is placed in the adjustment shown in Fig. 1, and in order to adjust the chair so that the child can lie down all that is necessary is to irst loosen the thumbnuts e and the back can be turned down to the position shown in dotted lines. The foot-rest is next turned up to an elevated posi.- xo tion and the hooks u?, upon the ends of the cords u, are hooked through the eyes h2 in the free end of the foot-board, and the same is held up to support the feet of the child. In order to raise or lower the chair it is only necessary to slide the rings W' W up and down, and they will remain in any position in which they are placed, and will be unaffected 'by the weight thrown upon the ropes.
The operation of knocking the chair down 2o preparatory to shippingis performed bysirn'ply removing the stay-rods, and, as the arm-rests and spokes are only loosely joined together, they can be quickly taken to pieces. The back can be turned down upon the top of the' seat, the foot-board folded down, and the Whole de` vice compactly placed in a small space, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the cost of shipment will be greatly reduced.
I do not herein broadly claim a combined 3o Swing,` consisting of astationary seat, swinging back, sliding board, supporting-cords, swivel, and spring; but
What I do claim as new, and desire tosccure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Ina baby-jumper, a back provided with pivoted arms having disks cast integral therewith and surrounding the pivot, said disks being provided with an embossment, in conlbination with a stationary disk provided with an engaging-face having a depression upon one side within which said embossment is adapted to fit, and a transverse concavity upon its opposite side adapted to partially embrace a rod orvspoke7 and a. pivot provided with a threaded end and nut, all combined and adapted to operate as describedl 2. The combination of the stationary seat, the lateral girders supporting said seat and connecting the side bars, the arm-rests, the spokes connecting said side bars and armrests, and having their ends loosely fitted in their sockets, the stay-rods adapted to removably hold the arm-rests and side bars in position, the hinged foot-rest, the adjustable back pivoted to the side frames of the seat, 55 the pivots being surrounded by clamps, whereby the back is held at the desired angle, andthe adjustable supporting-ropes, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as described. 6c
In testimony whereofl affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLTAM RANS\VE[LER.
