LABEL-HOLDER FOR SHEET-METAL VESSELS.

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. HASKER, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Holders for Sheet- Metal Vessels, of which the 'following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a sheet-metal vessel provided with my improved label holder; Fig. 2 a vertical section al view of the same; Fig. 3 an interior view of the side of the vessel provided with the holder. Fig. 4. is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.

This invention has relation to certain improvements upon label holders for sheetmetal vessels, and it consists of certain novel features of construction described and particularly set forth in the following specification.

Referring to the drawings, c designates one of the walls of a sheet-metal can, box, or other vessel, and b a rib formed on the sheetmetal by pressing or forcing a narrow portion of the metal bodily outwardly without puncturing the same, except as hereinafter described, the body of the metal inclosed within the rib being uninjured and undisturbed. The rib has a lower portion b', which is preferably horizontal and forms the bottom of the label receptacle, and the two vertical side-portions h b which extend up from the ends of part b and form the ends or sides of the label receptacle, the space between the two parts b being free of obstructions.

Formed on each of the side ribs b are two clamping ears c, which are flush with the outer edge of the ribs and extend inwardly toward each other a short distance and are made malleable to adapt them to be bent against the label and clamp the same securely in place. Two ot' these ears are shown on each Vertical portion ot the rib, but it is obvious that a greater or less number may be employed if desired. The ears are formed by cutting small portions of the body of the vessel inside of and adjacent to the vertical parts b and pressing the cut parts outwardly Serial No. 480,636. (No model.)

The label is slipped down between the side ribs b" until it rests on the bottom rib b', and it is then clamped securely in place by bending in the malleable ears, which press and hold the label against the body ot metal inclosed by the ribs. It will be observed that by this construction the label holder may be not only entirely stamped up from the body of the metal vessel itself, thus avoiding the use of independent fastening devices which are costly and cumbersome, but the ribs and ears may be brought as nearly ilush with the body of the vessel as is possible, thereby overcoming all inconvenience in packing and cleaning. This construction also insures extreme neatness and simplicity in appearance.

It will be observed that the ribs and ears may be stamped and cut in one operation, by means of suitable tools, which insures cheapness of manufacture.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim isl. A sheet-metal vessel having formed on` it a label holder, said holder consisting of a receptacle formed by pressing a narrow portion of the sheet-metal body outwardly a short distance to form a rib and one or more securing ears, substantially as described.

2. A sheet-metal vessel provided with a label-holder, said label-holder consisting ot' a rib formed by pressing a portion of the metal bodily outwardly, said rib having a lower part b and two end parts b, the end parts being provided with ears, substantially as described.

3. A sheet-metal plate having formed on it a label-holder, said label-holder consisting of a rib having a lower horizontal portion and two upright portions at the ends of the same, suitable parts of the rib being provided with ears, said rib being formed by pressing a narrow portion of the sheet-metal bodily outward substantially as described.
