To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. MALLEY, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Range-Tanks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved range tank formed of sheet metal.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of the blank from which the cover of the tank is formed. Fig. 2 illustrates the tank cover after it is bent into shape for attachment to the body. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the body portion of the tank. Fig. 4. is an enlarged transverse sectional view of the tank in process of construction. Fig. 5 is a plan view, showing the tank applied to a range. tive view of 'one end portion of the completed tank. Figs. 7, 8 and 9 are detail views of'a tank corner in dierent stages of construction.
In the construction of the device as shown,
the numeral 10 designates a receptacle, the sides of which are formed of sheet metal. The lower edges of the sides of the receptacle 10 are bentinwardly and upwardly (Fig. 4) and caused to embrace downwardly and inwardly curved portions 11 of the bottom 12 of the receptacle, which said portions are joined and hermetically sealed.
The upper edges ofthe side portions of the receptacle 10 are first bent outward, thus forming flanges 13, 14, the corners being cut away, as shown in'Fig. 3.
The cover 15 of the receptacle is formed of a sheet of metal 16, having notches 17 in the corners thereof, the side portions of the sheet 16 being bent down and inward on the lines 18-18, as shown' in Figs. 1 and 2 to form grooves to receive the margins of the flanges on the receptacle 10. The cover 15 is then slid longitudinally to proper position upon the flanges 13, 14:, the latter sliding loosely in the grooves of said cover and the Fig. 6 is a perspec-l down turned edges 19 of said cover arethen compressed against the edges of said flanges, as shown in Fig. 4, and illustrated in detail in Fig. 7. l
The cover 15 has a lid aperture 20 therein, near one end thereof, and diagonal cuts 21 are made in the metal at the corners of the said aperture, the said lmetal at the sidesof said aperture being bent downwardly and forming flanges 22. Parallel to the cover 15, and hinged thereto by means of hinges 23, 23, is alid 24, which lid has down-turned outer edges forming flanges 25, 25, adapted to engage and confine flanges 26, 26 formed on,
'and horizontally extending from, the frame 27, also made of sheet metaland positioned in the aperture 20. A clip 28 is formed on,
or fixed to, the end portion of the lid 24, op;
posite to the hinges 23, and extends upwardly and outwardly fromy said lid. After the cover has been placed as above described the flanges 13 and 19 are then conjunctively turned downwardly on the lines 29, 30, thus forming a projection horizontally and obliquely outside the plane of the side portions of the receptacle 10. The completed device illustrates this down turned and outwardly extending projecting feature, as dor also Figs. 8 and 9.
\ The completed device is adapted to be mounted adjacent to,'or fixed upon, a range by any desired connection, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the connections between the tank and range forming no part of my invention. In the construction of my improved tank, the cover 15 is not applied to the tank until after .it is known what is the relative position of the tank and range to which it is'applied, thus providing for the positioning of the covers, relative to the tank, in accordance with the manner of attaching the tank to the range. In other words, if the tank is to be what is lknown as a left-hand tank (applied to the tion above described is such that the cover may be slid into place on the tank from either end of the latter.
The improved range-tank, comprising the body 10 having a closed bottom and substantially vertical side and end walls lthe upper edges of which are first bent outward to about a right-angle to form wide horizontal flanges 13, 14 which are cut away at each corner of said body to form an angular space thereat, the cover 15 formed of a sheet of metal and having an angular-notch 17 in each corner thereof, the edges of the cover-sheet being bent down and inward to form grooves or channels which are engaged to the marginaledges of said flanges 13, 14 on said body and compressed against the same, and the said anges 13, 14 of the body and the scanned margin of said cover being then conjunctively bent downward at a point some distance from the upright walls of said body to forni a projection both horizontally and obliquely outside the plane of the side-portions of said body, and presenting a substantial and [inished appearance, and said cover having an aperture to afford access to the interior of said body, and a lid applied to said aperture, substantially as herein specified.
