Description

(No Model.)
` F. DU P. THOMSON.
LABELl HOLDER. No. 507.393.
Patented Oct. y24, 1893.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANOIS DU P. THOMSON, OF WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
LABEL-HOLDER.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,393, dated October 24, 1893.
Application filed July 8,1893. Serial No.479,921. (llo model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANcIs Du P. TrroM` SON, of Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve` ments in Label-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a 'perspective View of a label holder` constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 a transverse, Vertical section thereof; Fig. 3 a plan view of a blank, showing the manner of making said holder; Fig. 4 a perspective view of another form of my invention; Fig. 5 a side view thereof; and Fig. 6 a plan view of a blank showing the manner of making this form of holder.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in the several figures.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient label holder for use especially on shelves, pigeon holes, &c., that shall be capable of being secured thereto without the employment of tacks, screws or other means which are apt to mar the same, and whose manufacture can be easy and cheap, and to these ends said invention consists in the label holder constructed substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the form of invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 there is an open, oblong frame A to receive and display the desired label which is held in place by a flange ot at the bottom edge of the frame on its rear side, and a like flange a' at the upper edge of the display Opening B. Projecting horizontally from the upper edge of the frame A is a lip or flange C that is designed to engage the upper side of the partition or shelf to which the label is to be attached, while to engage the under side of said shelf a second lip or flange D is provided that lies substantially parallel with, and, of course, in a lower horizontal plane than the other one C. The flanges or lips C and D thus form a clip for the attachment of the device to place, and preferably they will have some degree of springiness or elasticity to cause them to exert a clamping action. This holder, with all the parts above described, is made Wholly in one piece by taking a rectan gular blank of sheet metal, such as is shown in Fig. 3, and after cutting, in straight lines along two sides and the lower edge at c, e and e' respectively, hending the piece within said cuts inward and then upward and downward to form the label-holding flange a' and then again horizontally rearward to produce the lower, shelf engaging lip D. The lower edge of the blank is bent upward on the rear side thereof to form the label-holding fiange a and the upper shelf-engaging flange C is formed simply by hending the blank at the dotted line The display Opening B, it will be seen, is produced by hending back the metal between the cuts e, e and e' in making the flange a' and lip D.
The form of the invention shown in Figs. 3 to 6, has the label-holding frame A and the shelf engaging lips or flanges C and D, but with the difference from the other that the display Opening B is formed by the entire removal of a piece of suitable size, which thus is not utilized as in said other form. There is also a dilference in respect to the manner of providing the shelf-engaging flanges. In making these latter a cut is made at g about a half an inch from each end of the blank as shown in Fig. 6 and the narrow strip h thus provided at each end is first bent downward to form a flange to engage the upper edge of the label and then horizontally rearward. The portion between the slits furnishes the upper shelf-engaging flange C, being simply bent back at the upper edge of the frame at a right angle thereto, the same as in the form first described. Both forms of the holder are used in the same way, which is simply by slipping the clips over the shelf or division where they are to be employed. Their attachment and removal do not mar the woodwork and intead of detracting from the appearance of the part with which they are used, they can be made to add thereto by being given an ornamental configuration. Brass,
copper, and other sheet metal may be used in their manufacture.
The upper shelf engaging clip will not interfere with the withdrawal of envelopes, papers, &c., as in practice its length will be such that its free edge will be to the rear of said the latter fia-nge to engage the lower side of the shelf, and a lip to engage the Upper side thereof bent to extend horizontally from the upper edge of said frame, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A label holder for shelves, dac. comprising a label holding frame having suitable flanges on its rear side to engage the upper and lower edges of a label, a lip or flange projecting horizontally from its upper edge to engage the upper side of the shelf, and a second lip or flange to engage the lower side of the Shelf, projecting from and integral with the flange for engaging the npper edge of the label, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of June, 1893.
FRANCIS DU P. THQMSON.
