SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,992, dated September 12, 1893.

Be it known that I, OAKMAN A. MOODY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canaan, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Milking-Stools, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to milking stools; and it has for its object to provide simple and convenient means for adj ustably supporting the pail in such manner that it may be turned tudinal sectional view on the line xa:, Fig.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the seat of the stool, which is of about the form shown, preferably, and tapered toward one end, being supplied with a cross-strip of batten at the opposite end to which are secured a pair of legs 2. The reduced end of the seat 1 has an opening passing vertically therethrough, and applied to the upper and lower surfaces of the said reduced end are heads 3, of circular form also having circular openings therein aligning with the said opening in the reduced end of the seat, the said heads forming a means of reinforcement for the portion of the seat to which they are applied, and to resist the strain brought to bear thereagainst. A 1eg4 passes upward through the openings in the said heads and the reduced portion of the seat and is secured against movement. The said leg 4 is provided with a series of openings 5,

which extend transversely therethrough and that are adapted to receive a linch-pin or spring-pin 6, by means of which a head 7 is loosely and rotatably supported at a suitable elevation on the said leg 4. Secured to the said head 7 is a wire ringor band 8, in which the pail is placed and held during the operation of milking, it being observed that upsetting of the pail will thereby be prevented, and further that by the adjustment of the head 7 vertically, the pail may be placed at varying elevations to suit the height of the cow or the position of the milker. The pin 6 is removable at will, and the head 7 may thereby be readily adjusted or entirely removed from the leg 4. Furthermore, the under head 3 prevents the head 7 from bearing directly against the reduced portion of the seat 1, and thereby provides for turning the wire ring or band 8 under the seat without frictional contact of the ring or band against the under side of the seat.

The device as set forth is simple and ef- "fective in its construction and operation and very useful and convenient, and it can be cheaply manufactured and sold at a small cost price.

It will be observed that the leg 4 projects above the upper head 3 and forms a means for supporting or receiving the pail-holder over the seat, as well as under the seat, that is if it is desired; the pail-holder may be detached or removed from the said leg 4 and placed on the upper projecting portion of the said leg above the seat. The reduced end of the seat is constructed for the purpose of permitting the milker to place his left limb on the right side to make room for turning the pail one-quarter to the right While cleaning the cow before milking.
