Description

(No Model.)
S.- L. AUSTIN. DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING PAILS.
No. 558,340. Patented Apr. 14, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SALMON L. AUSTIN, OF DE KALB, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING PAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,340, dated April 14, 1896.
Application filed January 29, 1896. Serial No. 577,233. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SALMON L. AUsTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Kalb, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Supporting Pails; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices for supporting pails; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter fully described.
lleretofore persons milking cows placed the pail between the knees and with a great deal of exertion held the pail, but when the same became heavy there was danger of it falling and spilling the contents of the pail. By my device the pail is supported between the legs of a person and no pressure is necessary upon the pail to keep it in position.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention, in which the figure represents aperspective view of my device.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawing, A designates a hoop or ring made, preferably, of stout wire, one end of which is secured at a to a plate B and the opposite or free end passes through a perforation b in the lug c on the plate aforesaid. This lug c has a female threaded opening in which is a male screw d (thumb-screw) for securing said free end of the wire when adjusted. At opposite sides of the ring A the wire is bent outwardly, as at e e, and to which bent pora wire hook is, and opposite the same is a similar hook k, secured to the lug Z of the plate A.
In use the ring is adjusted to a pail, the
wire thereof being lengthened or shortened,
as may be desired, for spanning a pail and held by the thumb-screw. At the same time the hooks in lo grasp the upper rim of the pail and hold the ring in place, while the loop portion of the supporting-hook, as at i i, rests against the side of the pail and keep the hooks in an upright position, and hooks f f are passed over each knee of the person while sitting in milking a cow. Thus by the hooks the pail is supported and heldin position, and a device as herein described is simple in construction, durable, and at the same time cheap to manufacture. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the ring, of the plate A, the thumb-screw for securing the free end of said ring thereto, the hooks k, k, for holding the ring up and in position on a pail and the knee-hooks pivoted to the ring having a downward extension all for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SALMON L. AUSTIN. Witnesses:
A. G. KENNEDY, H. W. PRENTIOE.
