SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,653, dated September 5, 1893.

Application filed April 13, 1893- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHNN. BEALL, of Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementsin Door-Fasteners of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of door fasteners intended more especially for travelers, and which are designed to be carried in the pocket for use to more securely fasten the doors of private rooms, as for instance in hotels when it is desired to more effectuallysecure the door than is permitted by the ordinary fastenings to prevent an unauthorized entrance through the door into the room; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.

Figure I is a perspective view illustrative of my improved fastener, the parts being shown in closed, carrying position in full lines and partly opened in dotted lines. Fig. 11 is a perspective view of the fastener, the parts being shown in operative position. Fig. III is a top view or plan of the fastener in position against a door, a portion of the door and frame appearing in horizontal section. Fig. IV is a view illustrating the fastener closed, and having a portion of the door holding bar removed by section, to illustrate the position of the parts when folded. Fig. V is a perspective view of a modification.

Referring to the drawings:-1 represents the U-shaped door holding bar, within the ends of which is pivoted a hook 3, at 2. The hook 3 has a sharp point 4, and its other end extends beyond the pivot :2 to form an extension 5 provided with serrations 6.

In the U-shaped bar 1, is a pivoted catch 7, the free end of which is adapted to engage with the serrations 6 on the hook 3, when the fastener is in use, for securing a door, as clearly illustrated in Figs. II and III.

In the use of my door fastener, the hook 3 is moved from the closed position illustrated in Fig. I, to the position illustrated in dotted lines in the same figure, and the door being open, the point 4 is placed against the door frame A, and the door B is closed against the bar, forcing the point i into the door frame,

thus holding the hook 3 securely between the frame and the door. The U-shaped bar 1 is then thrown over upon the door, in which movement the extension 5 passes through between the two sides of the bar 1, and throws the pivoted catch 7 outward. The U-shaped bar being at this time against the door, the point of the pivoted catch is placed so that it rests in one of the serrations 6, and thus holds the bar 1 securely against the door. 8 is an opening in the extension 5 by which the fastener may be attached to a key-ring. To release the fastening from the door, it is only required to disengage the catch 7 by throwing it out of engagement with the serrations 6, when the parts may be folded into the position shown in Figs I and IV, and the fastener is in suitable shape to be carried either in the pocket, or otherwise, there being left no objectionable projecting points.

In the modification shown in Fig. V, the construction and operation are substantially the same as in the main form, with the exception that the bar catch and hook are formed of wire, instead of flat metal the points at on the hook 3, are in this form, made of the ends of the wire, and the bar 1 is connected by loops to the hook 3, and the pivoted catch .7 connected by loops to the bar 1; the pivoted catch has bearing at its free end, when in use, against the extension 5, which extension may be concave in form, as shown, and may, if desired, have the serrations 6 shown in the main form.

A device constructed in accordance with my invention forms an inexpensive and efiicient means of securing a door, and a device which, when not in use, can be folded into a convenient form for carrying.

I claim as my invention- A door fastener comprising a U-shaped bar, a catch hinged to the bar, and a hook, pivoted to the bar in front of the catch, formed with a point, adapted, when the hook is folded, to fit against the bar in rear of the catch, said hook being provided with an extension with which the catch is adapted to engage when in operative position; substantially as described.
