PANTALOONS.
No, 50,242. Patented 001;. s, 1865.

UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE- B. J. GREELY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IM PROVEM ENT lN PANTALODNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,242, dated October 3, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, -B. J. GREELY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvementin Pantaloons and I do hereby declare that the folfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to theaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- 7 Figure 1 illustrates my invention in pantalocus, and shows how they are worn. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper part of a pairot' pantaloons made according to my in-' tion.
This invention in pantaloons is applicable also to drawers for men, women, and children and it consists in a novel way of uniting them at the place of the seam or opening in front, whereby buttons and hooks and eyes are dispensed with, the front part of the body being, made with'an inner and an outer lapel, the outer one of which folds over the inner one, both being drawn out to and kept in their proper positions by means of elastic straps made fast to the band at opposite sides, the strap which holds the inside lapel being attached to the inside of the band, and the other strap to the outside.
A designatesa pair of pnntaloons made after my invention. Oneot' the modes in common use of making the bodies of pantaloons is to unite the division in front by means of buttons, which, being sewed on the inner face of one division, are passed through buttonholes made on the inner division, or the said divisions are united by hooks and eyes. Such divisions were made so as to overlap each other just enough to conceal their fastenings, and the places of the buttons and button-holes or other fastenings were determined from the measure of the abdomen and waist, any ad-. justment required after the article was made being effected by means of straps or strips in the back of the pantaloon.- One'example of such adjustment is seen in Letters Patent No. 20,708, granted to me 29th June, 1858.
My present invention relates to a new style of cutting and securing the fronts of pantaloons, and the same principle may be used for dividing their backs. The front of a. pantaloon is made with two lapels, an outer one, B, and an inner one, C. The edge of the outer lapel isto be straight, while the inner one may beangular. The edge of each is provided with a ring or other suitable device, which may be taken hold of by a hook or clasp of an elastic strap, D, which starts from the band at one side of the garment. The strap D, for the inside lapel is, of course, on the inside of the garment. The same method of dividing the garment may be used for the back, as illustrated in Fig.2; but for the purpose of providing for the lapels by means of buckles, so that the length of the straps may be taken up at pleasure.
It will be observed that my invention enables me to dispense with buttons on the divisions of the front, and also, that since the straps D are elastic, the lapels will be always held up to the person whatever his attitude,
andthedivision in front will not be liable to gape open. Moreover, the front division will not become worn, so as to present an unsightly appearance before the rest of the garment is worn out, as is the case with garments buttoned up in front. Furthermore, the waist being closed at the places of division by yielding fastcuings, it follows that the body of the wearer is left unrestrained and free to assume an y position without doing violence to the garment.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Forming the fronts and. also the backs of pnntaloons with lapels, as shown, and holding them in place by means of elastic straps, substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 31st day of July, 1865.
