SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,049, dated June 20, 1893.

Be it known that I, J EssE BENNETT, a citi- I zen of the United States, residing at Chicago,

Cook county, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxing-Gloves, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object to improve boxing gloves, and it consists of a glove of this character constructed in such manner that the padding or stuffing is arranged opposite to and covers the edge of the palm below the little finger of the wearer. In the drawings, Figure 1, is a front view of a boxing glove embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is an edge view thereof, and Fig. 3, is a cross section on the line 33, of Fig. 1.

The construction of the glove and the arrangement of the padding at the back, over the thumb, and across the ends of the fingers, as shown in the drawings, is not new with'me and therefore need not be described. That portion of the glove which comes opposite to the edge of the palm below the little finger, and which is indicated by the letter X, in the drawings, is padded, and herein lies my invention. 1

In practice I prefer that the same piece of leather which covers the back should also cover the padding'at this portion; the seam x, which unites the back covering y with the palm covering z, of the glove curving inward or toward the thumb from a point about opposite the base of the little finger instead of extending straight down along the outside of the hand as is usual.

It is evident that a pad separate from that at the back of the glove might be used to cover this portion of the hand,but it is preferable to have the back pad extend over the edge of the hand as shown, and that the same piece of leather which covers the back should extend over the pad at m, as the number of seams required is thereby reduced and the covering is smooth from the back to the seam 0c.

The advantages incident to my invention are the protection afforded to the hand of the striker as well as to the person struck, particularly in body blows struck somewhat downward, and in blows struck with the open hand in boxing for points.-

Another advantage incident to my invention is that the seam as, is so far forward, or away from the edge of the glove, that it is practically impossible to scrape or cut a person therewith. The seam 01:, may therefore be an outside seam and can be closed by sewing after the glove has been turned and stufied, thus facilitating the construction of the glove.

What I claim is 1. Aboxing-glove having that portion which covers the edge of the palm below the little finger padded, substantially as set forth.

2. A boxing-glove having the padding for the back of the glove extended around the edge of the palm below the little finger so as to cover the same, and having the outside covering y, for the padding extended over this portion of the padding, the line of the seam which unites the covering y, with the palm covering z, of the glove extending inward, or toward the center of the palm, from a point near to the base of the little finger, substantially asset forth.

3. A boxing glove having the padding for the back of the glove extended around the edge of the palm below the little finger, the seamwhich unites the covering for such pad dingwith palm covering of the glove being an outside seam, substantially as set forth.
