To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES TOWLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the'county of Montcalm and State of *Michigam have invented a new and useful Commode, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention relates to commodes and consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed. The object of this invention is yto provide means for adj ustably inclosing a commode in a case or frame in such manner that it may be readily positioned for-use when desired, and also closely confined to avoid escape of offensive odors, the construction and operation of the parts being simple and effective, of a strong and durable nature and comparatively inexpensive in manufacture and production.

Referring to the drawings:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a case or frameshowing the improved commode and its attachments in connection therewith. Fig.2 is a perspective view of the cover holding device removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line -oc, Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line yy, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan View, partly in section, of the case or frame and taken horizontally through Fig. 3 on the line 2 2. Fig..6 is a bottom plan view of the commode casing.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the outer inclosing case or frame,

which is shown in the form of a wash-stand, but it will be readily understood that said inclosing case or frame may be of any contour and adapted for any use, so long as it is provided with a lower compartment 2 having a door 3 adapted to snugly close the same.

In the bottom of the compartment 2 is located a board 4 having a leaf 5 hinged to the front edge thereof and which forms an inside closure for the said lower compartment. The leaf 5 is constructed with an opening 6 and to one wall thereof is hinged a leg or support 7 adapted to engage the floor when the leaf is let down, and folded back in the said opening 6 when the 'leaf is in closed position over the front of the said compartment.

On the board 4 are secured metallic guides 8 of angular form adapted to be engaged by hangers 9 secured to the bottom of the commode casing 10. The said hangers have angular projections 11, which take under the guides 8, and also support rollers or wheels 12 which provide for anV easy movement of the commode casing on the board 4in and out of the compartment 2. The said commode casing 10 comprises a hinged door 13 and a top 14 having a central opening 15 having a rubber gasket 16 surrounding the same on the underside ofv the said top 14. Within said commode casing and centrally located on opposite sides thereof, are vertically disposed ribs 17 on which are adj ustably fitted end slides 18 rigidly connected by a table or support 19 on which the commode 20 is adapted to removably rest. To the slides 18, below the table or support 19, are secured. blocks 21 having recesses or slots 22 adapted to receive the opposite ends of a fiat bowed -spring 23. A semi-circular guard rail 24 is carried by the slides 18 and has the ends thereof bent downward at an angle to removably engage openings 25 in the upper ends of the said slides.

By means of the construction just set forth, the commode is prevented from being displaced in a rear direction, and thereby sustained in proper relative position on the tableor support 19, under the opening 15, and is adapted to bear against the gasket 16 surrounding said opening.

In the bottom of the commode casing 10 is mounteda rock shaft 26 having an operating handle 27 at one end and crank arms 28 at the opposite end movably supporting a roller 29 adapted to bear against the under side of the spring 23 to raise the table or support 19 and elevate the commode 20 so that the upper edge thereof will contact with the gasket 16. A

Over the opening 15, on the outer'side is adapted to be fitted a removable lid or cover 30 having the edge thereof surrounded by a husher 31 of rubber or other suitable material, and having a central knob 32 engaged by spring arms 33 having a slide 34 and carried by aswin ging arm 35 pivotally connected to one side of the commode case. The arms 33 are intended to removably connect the lid or cover 30 to the arm 35. The arm 35 has both a swinging movement horizontally and may be raised vertically, and has its end pivoted to a yoke 36 swiveled to a bolt or stud 37. The bolt or stud 37 rises vertically from a casting 38 having a vertical flange 39 formed with a stop or shoulder 40 against which the arm 35 is adapted to strike to limit the horizontal swinging movement thereof. The ver tical movement of the said arm is permitted through the pivotal connection thereof with the yoke 36.

On the bottom front portion of the commode casing 10 is a spring catch 41 adapted to engage a suitable projection on the board 4and prevent withdrawal of said casing beyond a certain point. Said catch may be readily released, and the casing 10 may be entirely withdrawn when desired.

IThe device as awhole is simple and compact, and embodies convenience and adaptability in several different ways. The tight Iittin g parts prevent escape of oensive odors, and an unpleasant eect is thereby avoided.

In place of the rollers or wheels on the commode casing, other devices may be used in providing a sliding movement thereof as will be readily apparent. The guides S are continued over the leaf 5 and are in alignment with the said guides on the board 4. As has been stated slides may be used in placeof the said guides and the same beneficial opera-` tion will result.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a device of the character set forth,the combination of an outer casing having a compartment therein, a board -in the bottom of said compartment having guides thereon, a leaf hinged to said board and having a leg hinged thereto and guides continued thereover in line with the guides of the said board, and a `commode casing having hangers carrying wheels and provided with extensions to engage said guides, substantially as described.

2. A commode casing having an adjustable table or support therein, substantiallyas described, combined with a rock-shaft having an operating handle at the outer end and crank-arms at the inner end adj ustabl y supporting a roller adapted to engage a `portion of said table or support.

3. In a device of the character set forth, the

combination of a commode casing having a,w

spring located underneath said table or supf port and carried thereby, and a crank-shaft having a projection to engage said spring, substantially as described.

5. A commode casing having a top'opening surrounded by a gasket located on the under side of the top, vertical guides located in opposite sides of the casing, a table or support rigidly connecting said guides, a guard rail connected to said table or support, a spring located under the said tableor support to hold the commode, and a crank-shaft having a roller connected thereto adapted to vcome in contact with the said spring to raise the upper edge of commode against the gasket, said parts being combined, substantially as described.

6. A commode casing having an opening in the top portion thereof, a lid or cover for said opening, and an arm detachably connected at its outer end to said lid or cover and having the opposite end of the same pivotally attached to swing horizontally and hinged to rise and fall vertically, substantially as described.

7. A commode casing having an opening in the top portion thereof, a `lid or cover, and a horizontally and vertically movable arm to which said lid or cover is detachably secured, and a casing having a shoulder against which the said arm is adapted to come in contact and a yoke to which it is pivoted, said parts being combined, substantially as described.
