M. J'. HERZLER. WASHING MACHINE.
Patented May 23, 1893.
WITNEASSES UNITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN J. HERZLER, OF BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.v
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patentv N0. 498,115, dated May 23, 1893. Application filed February 8, 1892. Serial No. 420,651. (No model.)
.To all whom 'it may concerne:
Be it known that I, MARTIN J. HEEZLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, county of St. Clair, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in the class of washing machines which are adapted to swing or rock, and consists of novel means for retaining the lid of the tub in position.
It also consists in providing the tub with a removable supporting device.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a supporting device for awashing machine, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the machine and support therefor in operative position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings:-A designates the tub of a washing machine, and A designates a stand on which is supported the gudgeons B, B', to which are secured hangers C, C', the latter having fastened to them at their lower ends the bar D,"which is adapted to pass under the tub and assist in supporting the same. Secured to thel bar D, is vthe cross piece E, which is provided with shoulders F, F at its ends for retaining the tub in position, and in a measure supporting the same. Loosely tted on the gudgeon B, is a rod G, which is adj ustably fastened by means of its threaded end to one end of the bar H above the same, the other end of said bar having the rod G connected with it in a similar manner, the lower end of said rod G being provided with a hook G2, which is fitted on the gudgeon B and as is evident may be easily removed therefrom.
J designates the lid vof the tub, the same being shouldered so as to provide a tight joint with the tub, andprevent any leakage thereyfor connecting the lid withthe tub, and prevent improper displacement of the former. The upper ends of the rods G, G', are threaded so as to permit the adjustment of the bar H thereon.
The operation is as followsz-The. screw is loosened, the rod G unhooked from the gudgeon B', and the bar H turned laterally, whereby the lid may be removed. The garments,
duc., to be washed are nowplaced in the tub with sufficient water and soap, after which the lid is applied, the bar and hooked rod are restored, and the screw tightened. Swinging motionsare then imparted to the tub in any suitable manner, whereby the garments,
&c., will be thoroughly Washed without any injurious effect, the machine-being effective in its nature, and of inexpensive construction.
Having thus described'my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I A washing machine consisting of standards, hangers with journals having bearings on said standards, a bar connecting the lower ends of vsaid hangers, across piece connected with said bar and having shoulders on itsupper side near the ends, a bar with rods adj ustably connected with its ends, one of said rods being detachably connected with one of the hanger journals, and the other rod being| permanently connected withl the other hanger journal a tub with a lid and a screw in said last mentioned bar bearing against said lid, said parts being combined substantially as described.
