J. FOX. Washing Machine.
No. 243,239. Patented June 21,1881.
Fay].
fags UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN FOX, or OSKALOOSA, IOWA, ASSIGNOR 'ro ANDREW J. PARKHURST, OF SAME PLACE.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,239, dated June 21, 1881.
Application filed May 12, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FOX, of ()skaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view, showing the device in" position. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the device for securing the beater-frame upon the vertical shaft; and Fig. 3 is a vvertical sectional view through the lower end of shaft K and the beater, showing the means for securing the beater upon the shaft.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to washing-machines and it consists in several improved details of construction, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A B represent two fiat bed or base plates, having recesses 0 upon their upper and under sides respectively, so as to enable them to be fitted together, as shown. The plate A is provided at its inner-end with a ring or collar, D, to receive a tube or thimble, E, projecting downward from the inner end of plate B. Both of the said plates are provided with suitable uprights having bearings for a horizontal shaft, F, carrying the gear-wheel G, by means of which the machine is operated. The said plates are also provided, near their outer ends, with downward-projecting sharp lugs H, as shown.
The upright I, formed upon plate A, is provided with a laterallyprojecting bracket, J, forming a bearing for the upper end of a vertical shaft, K, journaled in the tube or thimble D. Said shaft carries a pinion, L, engaging the gear-wheel G, so as to communicate motion to the frame secured to the lower end of the said shaft, as will be hereinafter described.
M represents the lid of the wash tub or box,
which may be constructed in any suitable manner. The saidlid has a central perforation to receive the tube or thimb1eE,which is threaded at its lower end to receive a convex-faced nut, N, which may be screwed up tightly against the under side of the lid without the interposition of a washer. V
It will thus be seen that when the several parts are properly placed together, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the entire fixture may be secured to the lid of the washing-machine by the single nut N. The convex face of the latter will insure tightness and stability without the necessity of using any washers.
By this invention the tightening of the single nut N is sufficient to restore the device to working order, if the parts become loose. The tube or thimble E also forms, as will be seen, a bearing for the vertical main shaft K. The shaft K is provided at its lower end with a thread, 0, to receive a nut, P, by which the beater -frame Q is secured in position upon said shaft. Above the thread 0 the shaft K is provided with a transverse opening, R, (or two diametrically-opposite rece'sses,) to receive the studs S, formed upon the inner sides of a pair of beveled-edged keys, T, fitting in notches .U at the central opening, V, of the beater frame. The latter is provided in the usual manner with pegs or beaters W, projecting downward from the cross-bars of which the said beater-frame is formed.
The beater-frame, which is usually made of wood, may by this arrangement {be readily adjusted or removed; and the keys T, being vex-faced nut N, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the lid of a washing-machine, of the plates A B, constructed as shown, with bearings for a horizontal and a vertical shaft, and a single nut for securing the said lid and plates-together, as set forth.
4. The combination, with the shaft K, having transverse openingR and thread 0, of the 10 keys T, having studs S, and the beater-frame Q, having opening V, and notches U, as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN FOX. Witnesses:
GEO. A. WALLS, H. O. PARKHURST.
