NiTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OBED W. 'BARNARD, OF SENECA, KANSAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 317,486, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed May 27, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OBED W. BARNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seneca, in the county of Nemaha and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to washing-machines; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a view in perspective of a washingmachine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plain view of the suds-box with the lid removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the middle of the machine. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the auxiliary suds-box removed from the main suds-box, and Fig. 5 is a bottoni perspective of the agitator.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the suds-box of the washing-machine, which is rectangular in form and is of the ordinary size in general use. The inner faces of the sides of the suds-box A are provided with horizontal cleats B B B2, near its upper edge having spaces C G between them. The inner faces of the sides of the sudsbox A are also provided with vertical cleats D D,the inner edges of which are aligned with the inner ends 0f the horizontal cleats B B2. rlhese vertical cleats D D form guides and stays for the projecting ends of the side boards of an auxiliary suds-box, E, which is removably fitted into the suds-box A. The suds-box A is provided with a hinged lid, Gr, having the gearing which drives the agitator-shaft attached thereto.
The agitatcr-shaft H passes through a bear ing in the base-plate l, secured to the lid G, and through a hole in the lid into the suds box A, or into the auxiliary suds-box E when the latter is in its place in the suds-box A. The lower end of the agitator-shaft is provided with the agitator J, which consists of a circular wooden plate, K, having four rectangular grooves, L, extending from near its central opening, through which the dasher-shaft is passed, to the edges of the plate K, to form the seats for the galvanized-iron agitator arms (No model.)
P, at its upper end for the shaft tg of the oscillating segmental gear-wheel R, the teeth S of which engage the teeth of the pinion N. The face of the gear-wheel R is iiat where the teeth S are located, and not beveled, as is customaryin this class of machines. On the same face with the teeth S, at the middle of the upper half of the gear-wheel R, is a tapering recess, T, provided with a bolthole, U. The lower end of the handle V rests in this recess T, and is secured in place by a bolt passed through a hole in the handle and through the bolt-hole U. The gear-wheel R is strengthened at its middle by an integral transverse bar, W, and below this it is open, as shown at X, to render it as light as possible without detracting from its strength.
When a full-sized or ordinary washing is to be done, the suds-box A is used, but when only a small-sized washing is to be done the auxiliary suds-box E is pnt in place, and but a small quantity of water needs to be heated, as it is not necessary to fill the main sudsbox. This gives the machine a decided advantage over other washing-machines, as in all of them a large quantity of water has to be heated even to wash a few small articles, which causes a waste of time and fuel in many instances,
and especially in the summer season when fires are not kept going.
Then the auxiliary sudsbox is removed, the rotation of the agitator in the main sudsbox creates a current in the water therein, and this current of water circulates the clothes around in the suds-box so that every article in turn will be gra-sped and whirled around in the water by the agitator, and thus all the clothes will be washed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. The combination, with the suds-box A, having the horizontal cleats B B B2 near the upper edges on the inner faces of its sides, the
