IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,543, dated August 29, 1871.
.To all. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM 0. MARK, J 0- snrn S. MAUGHLIN, and GEORGE A. DAVIS, of Onawa, in the county of Monona and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-lVIachines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of our improved machine, partly in section, to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line 00 m, Fig. 1.

Our invention relates particularly to an improvement on the washing-machine patented by Lull and Bowen, July 21, 1868. The improve; ment consists mainly in the relative arrangement of the large fluted roller and small rollers, as hereinafter described.
A are two standards, which are connected and held in their proper relative positions by rods B. The inner end of the lowest rod B projects, as shown in Fig. 1, to enter a recess or socket in a cleat or block, 0, attached to the bottom of the tub K, which tub may be an ordinary wash-tub. D is a large fluted roller, the journals of which revolve in stationary bearings in the lower part of the standards A. The outer journal of the roller D projects upon the outer side of its standard A, and to its projecting end is attached a gearwheel, E, into the teeth of which mesh the teeth of the gear-wheel F, pivoted to the upper part of the standard A, and to the outer end of the outer journal of which is attached the crank G, by means of which the machine is operated. H are small rollers placed above the large fluted roller D. Three or more small rollers, H, are used, and their journals revolvein blocks I placed in recesses formed in the inner sides of the upper part of the standards A. The rollers H are held down, to bear with proper force upon the clothes, by coiled springs J placed in recesses in the lower part of the inner sides of the standards A. The lower ends of the springs J are con: nected with the lowest rod B, or with the lower parts of the standards A, and their upper ends are connected with the blocks I,.to which the small rollers H are pivoted.
By this construction the blocks I can rock to allow the rollers H to adjust themselves to the varying thickness of the clothes passing between them and the large fluted roller D. The shaft of the crank G should enter and work in a notch formed in the upper edge of the tub O, to assist in holding the machine steady, and in which notch it may be secured by a wire or other fastening attached to the said tub O and passing over the said shaft.
The arrangement of the large roller below the small rollers instead of above them leaves a greater available space in the tub for washing the clothes by hand, or for access to them for other reasons; fringes and frills of garments are less liable to be caught or to be torn; the large roller carries up the Water to a greater extent; and it also sits lower in the tub than the small rolls in Lull and Bowens patent.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As the improvement herein described, the arrangement of the large fluted roller D below the small roller H, the same being connected so as to operate as specified.
2. The standards A A carrying the rollers D and H, and secured to the bottom K of the tub by means of rods B and recessed block 0, as specified.
