SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,811, dated April 18, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES H. KESSLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Humboldt, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing- Machines; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in washing machines and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the parts, whereby I am enabled to provide gearing for actuating the rollers instead of drivlng them directly from a crank-shaft, the parts being so constructed that the roller carrying frame also carries the gearing, and the top when lowered serves to hold the roller carrying frame in place.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a washingnachine constructed in accordance with my Invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the line x-w of Fig. 1.

A designates the tub or receptacle, which is of ordinary construction and is mounted on legs or supports a a. Within the tub is suspended, by means of springs I) b, a frame B, consisting of side and end pieces within which are journaled rollers upon which the articles to be washed are placed 0 designates an open frame, which is pivoted at one end to the tub or receptacle A, and upon the side pieces of this frame are journaled fluted rollers D D. The shafts of these rollers extend beyond one of the side pieces of the frame (3, and have rigidly keyed thereon cogwheels E E, said cogwheels being retained upon the frame bythe continuations 5 ff of a standard or upright F. This upright is carried by the frame and in turn carries a main driving-whee] G, which engages with the cogwheels E E so that when it is turned it will actuate the rollers D D.

The tub or receptacle is provided with a top H, which is hinged to one side of the same, and is cut away to receive the standard F and gearwheel G, and when the cover or top is lowered it may be retained in a closed position by hooks and eyes. This top or cover, immediately above the free end of the frame 0, is provided with a block h, so that when the cover is lowered the pivoted frame G will be held in a horizontal position; the free end of said frame bearing upon blocks, h, at tached to the sides of the tub.

In practice, when it is desired to wash articles, the water and soap are placed in the tub, and the clothes or articles to be Washed are placed upon the rollers carried by the frame B. The pivoted frame 0 is then lowered, and the cover closed, after which the gearwheel G may be either rocked or turned so as to impart motion to the rollers D, which agitate the clothes to clean the same.

I am aware that prior to my invention it was not broadly new to provide a frame having rollers with springs for forcing said frame against a roller, and I do not claim such invention broadly; but

What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a washing machine, the combination, of a spring supported frame having rollers, a pivoted frame 0 carrying rollers D D having cogwheels, a standard E which projects above the cover and carries a gear-wheel G, said cover carrying a block which is adapted to engage with the free end of the pivoted frame 0, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a Washing machine constructed sub stantially as shown, the combination of a spring suspended frame B carrying a series of transverse rollers, a frame 0 pivotedabove the same, said frame carrying rollers D D upon which are keyed cogwheels E E, a frame, comprising a horizontal portion and a vertical portion, attached on one side of the pivoted frame and supporting a gearwheel G, a top hinged to the receptacle and provided with cut away portions to receive the gearwheel and standard, said top also carrying a block or depending portion h which bears against the free end of the pivoted frame 0, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
