Application filed May 25, 1892. Serial No.84,335. (Model) York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coats, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved-combined coat and shawl.

The object of m yinvention is to produce a garment which may be quickly arranged to fit any size of person, within the usual limits,

and which may be hastily put on in case of fire to protect the wearer from the flames and smoke.

Another object of my invention is to provide means for allowing the wearer of my improved garment to safely carry a child out from a burning building.

\Vith these objects in view my invention consists of such a combination of parts and details of construction as will be fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, A is a coat constructed with a pair of folds, a, extending to ward the center of the back of the coat, the amount of cloth folded in being regulated to suit the size of the wearer by. means of a strap,

H is a kirt-lining secured along its upper edge to t e inside of the skirt of the coat and provided with a series of horizontal rows of button-holes, h, into which may be inserted the buttons on the skirt-fiaps,G,G. By havin a series of rows of bu tton-ho1es, as; described, the skirt-flaps may be buttoned either to the upper, lower, or intermediate horizontal row of button-holes, thus exposing more orless of the skirt-flaps below the bottom edge of the coat and enabling the coat to be ad justed to any length as may be necessary to make it fit the wearer.

K is a shawl buttoned to the coat by one row of buttons, 70, and arranged to be folded inwardly and held against the breast of the coat by a second row of buttons, 7o, secured to the outside of the shawl on the part that is folded inward, these buttons, is, being arranged to enter button-holes, 7c", in the edge of the coat. This shawl may be used to wrap around a child and permit the wearer of the coat to carry it through the fiam es and smoke with safety.

L are slipper pockets which are constructed with a space above and below the pocketopening, Z, as clearly shown in dotted lines, by which construction a pair of slippers, if inserted in the pockets, cannot work upward and out.

The manner of using my improved garment is so obvious from what has been said as to need no further descriptioii.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As an article of manufacture, a coat having a skirt-lining, a pair of skirt-flaps, and

means for securingihe flaps to the lining at varying heights, whereby the-skirt-ilaps may be adjusted. to shorten or lengihen the coat, substantially as set forth.

2. As an article of manufacture, a coat having a skirt-lining provided with a series of horizontal rows of button-holes and a pair of skirt-flaps each provided with a series of butions for engagement with any desired rowof button-holes in the shift-lining, whei'eby the v length ofche coal may be adjusted, snbstam tielly as set forth. 7
