Description

(No Model.)
HBRUOKNER,
TROUSERS.
PatentedMay 26, 1896.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND BRIIGKNER, OF MUNICH, GERMANY.
TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,683, dated May 26, 1896. Application filed August 26, 1895. Serial No. 560,507. (No model.) Patented in Luxemburg July 19, 1895, No. 2,324..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND BRiioKNEn, a citizen of the Kingdom of Bavaria, and a resi dent of Munich, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers, (patented in Luxemburg, No. 2,324, dated July 19, 1895,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trousers; and its object is to provide trousers for bicyclists which may generally be used in the manner of ordinary trousers or pantaloons, but which, when used for bicycling, may be drawn up to the knees and retained in this shortened condition. The trousers thus drawn up will present at the knee the appearance of trunkhose or knickerbockers. They offer the advantage of enabling the bicyclist to give them at any time and with little trouble the form which he may desire either for riding the wheel or for ordinary use.
To carry out these objects, my invention consists in the matter now to be described and then pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying. drawing, which represents in front elevation, partially in section, a pair of trousers, the right leg being represented in the ordinary form of long pantaloons, while the left leg is represented as drawn up and shortened to form kneebreeches or trunk-hosefor use of bicyclists, tourists, dac. By referring to this drawing it will be seen that each trousers-leg a is provided at each seam c with a cord or band 6 011 the inner side of the trousers, attached by sewing or otherwise to the lower end of the trousers-leg at c and running through and guided in a number of rings, loops, or, eyes cl. This cord or band extends to the outside of the garment at about the height of the knee. At this point a holder, preferably in the form of a clamp f, of any suitable construction is arranged, the cord or band 17 passing into and through the bite of such clamp. The movable clamping-lever g of this clamp serves to release or to clamp said cord or band in the usual manner. In order to prevent the escape of the cord or band from the clamp, the end of the said cord or band is provided with an enlargement or knot h. In order to conceal these holding devices f, the material of the trousers is doubled at the seams, and the material of the doubled portions or flaps serves to. cover up the holding devices. At this point, moreover, the continuity of the longitudinal seam is broken, so as to permit access to the holding device from the exterior when the trousers are donned. The part at which the holding device f is located is formed into a slot or pocket laterally open and closed at top and bottom by flaps attached at the inside.
Then it is desired to draw up or shorten the trousers, the holding device f is opened or unlocked and the cord or band I) is drawn upwardly. The trousers legs are thereby doubled up at their lower portions, forming an annular fold at each ring or loop d, whereby the appearance of trunk-hose is imparted to the garment at the knees and the calves of the wearer are uncovered. The holding device is then locked or clamped, and the free and exposed portion 45 of the band or cord is inserted into the slot. Each trousers-leg is provided with two such elevating devices, one being preferably arranged at each longitudinal seam of the garment. Manifestly any other holding device may be used in lieu of the clamp 9 shown, such as buckles, etc. 7
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I The combination, with a pair of trousers, having pockets at the knees, and lateral slits opening from the outside of the trousers into said pockets, of a series of rings secured to the interior of the trousers in a line below the said pockets, cords attached to the bottom of the trousers and extending through the rings into the pockets, and a holding device in each pocket, for holding its respective cord at any point, whereby the trousers may be converted into long trousers or knee trousers as desired, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDMUND BRucKNER.
