BOOK-BACK PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,441, dated. May 16, 1893.
Application filed January 19, 1888- Serial No. 261,287. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE Y. CRANE and JOHN W. BLooMEIELD, both of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Book- Back Protector, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a book to which our improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the protectors; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line x-9c in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment for book backs, which will prevent the wear of the book and at the same time facilitate the handling of the book.
Our invention consists in the combination with the book back, of one or more curved caps adapted to be attached to the back of the book, and to cover the ordinary leather hubs, or to be used in lieu of such hubs.
Our invention is particularly designed to be used in connection with account-books, or books requiring frequent handling,but it may be applied to books of any description.
To the back A, of the book B, are attached the curved hollow caps O, O, (J, 0. Each cap is formed of a curved back plate a, two crescent-shaped end plates 17, secured to or formed integrally with the curved back plate a, the side pieces or flanges of the plate a being provided with holes 0, for receiving the nails or screws by which the protector is attached to the back of the book. The caps are made of different widths and lengths, and of different curvature to adapt them to books of different thickness and of different form, andv to hubs of different widths where they are applied to books provided with hubs on their backs.
In the present case We have shown a book provided with two wide protectors at the ends and two narrow protectors near the middle of the book, but we may make the protector of sufficient width to cover the greater portion of the book.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1 1. A book-back protector consisting of a strip, curved to conform to the hub'of a book, and adapted to cover the outside of the same, and a side piece to strengthen the curved strip and protect the side of the hub on the book, said side pieces extending the entire length of the main strip substantially as de scribed.
2. A book-back protector consisting of a flexible strip curved to conform to the hub of a book and adapted to cover the outside of the same, and a side to strengthen the curved strip and protect the side of the hub on the book, said side pieces extending the entire length of the main strip substantially as described.
3. A book-back protector consisting of a strip curved to conform to the hub of a book and adapted to cover the outside of the same, and two side pieces to strengthen the curved strips and protect the sides of the hub on the book, said pieces extending the entirelength of the main strip substantially as .described. 4. A book-back protector consisting of a strip having perforated ends and side pieces or flanges, curved to conform to the hub of a book, and adapted to cover the outside of the same, and a side piece to strengthen the curved strip and protect the side of the hub on the book, substantially as described.
5. A book back protector, consisting of a curved strip provided with perforated ends, and having side pieces, said protector adapted to be applied to the back of a completed book, substantially as described.
6. A book back protector consisting of a flexible hollow detachable hub having side pieces or flanges, and adapted to be attached to a completed book, substantially as shown and described.
