TRACE-EYE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDMUND CLARK BIL- GER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Curwensville, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace- Eyes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the end of a trace provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the metallic binding for the eye of the trace and Fig. 3 is a view show ing one layer of the trace secured in the metallic binding or lining, and the other half 'of the said binding or lining ready to receive the layer.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My invention has relation to metalliclinings or bindings for theeyed ends of traces, which strengthen the said eye and stiffen the same; audit consists in the. improved construction and combination of parts of such a lining or binding, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A indicate the two layers of the trace, which layers. arestitched together in the usual manner,with the exception of their rear eyed ends, which are formed with the registering cockeyes B. The rear eyed ends of the traces are preferably pear-shaped, as shown in the drawings, having their rear rounded portion wider than the forward portions, where they pass over'into the trace proper, and the casing or lining O has a corresponding shape. This casing consists of a plate, D, formed with an eye, E, slightly larger than the eyes in the trace-halves, which plate is of the same shape as the ends of the trace-halves, and is placed between the same.

The sides F of the casing project to both 7 sides from the edge of the plate and have the edges cut out to form teeth G, and these teeth aresufficiently flexible to allow of their being bent down upon the outer sides of the layers of the trace and forced slightly into the'faces or sides of the same.

Theplate is preferably provided with teeth H at its inner end, which teeth project to both sides and enter the inner sides of the layers of the trace, when the said layers are placed each into one-half of the casing on bot-h sides of the plate, and the faces of the plate are formed withprojecting points I, which likewise may enter the inner faces of the layers of the trace.

The casing is secured upon the ends of the layers of the trace by placing the said ends of the layers into the halves of the casing with their eyes registering with each other andwith the larger eye in the central plate of the casing, and the toothed edges. of the sides of the casing are thereupon bent over the edges of the layers of the trace and forced into the faces of the said layers,the teeth upon the central plate and the projections upon the same being forced into the inner faces of the trace-layers while forcing the toothed edges of the sides of the easinginto the outer faces. The ends of the trace will thus be held in the casing by the teeth and points of the same, as well as by its shape,

the outer larger portionsbeing held in the corportions of the casing.

Having thus described myinveution,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination,with atrace or an analogous article, of a metal plate having a central perforation, and a metal strip secured perpendicularly by its longitudinal middle line to the outer edge of said plate, and extending along all-but one end thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
