Be it known that I, CHARLES A. PETTIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined flames and Collars, of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact specification. I
My invention relates to improvements 1n combined collar and hames and constitutes an improvement on my former invention of combined collar and hames issued to me May 24, 1892, and numbered 475,606.
The improvements in this case are on the adjustable yoke which connects the hames together at their upper ends; the plates for preventing the ends of the collar from pressing into the horses neck, and the construe tion of the lockin g device which aifords means for receiving the neck yoke and belly-band straps.
I will now proceed to describe nay-invention referring to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1, represents a front elevation of my improved collar and hames. Fig. 2 is a plan in detail of the metallioplate for preventing the ends of the collar from pressing into the horses neck. Fig. 3 is a plan of my improved adjustable yoke, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the improved locking device showing the attachment for receiving the yoke-straps and belly-band strap.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the different figures.
A represents the hames the lower ends being constructed as in my former invention with the grooves (not shown) over which the locking device fits, and recesses for preventing pressure on the horses wind-pipe. The upper ends of said hames are somewhat flattened as shown at k and provided with a series of holes.
The yoke B is arched as illustrated and is formed with elongated portions g which straddle the hames, and are also provided with a series of holes which admit of pins or screws being passed through them. Thus it will be seen that by this construction the combined Serial No. 439,881. (No model.)
collar and hames can be made to fit the necks of horses of difierent sizes.
The object of the plates D is as before stated, to prevent the ends of the collar from pressing into the horses neck. These plates D have a flangefbent at substantially right angles to the main or hearing portion. This fiangef is provided with holes 0 for receiving the rivets or screws which connect it with the hames A. When this plate is properly adjusted, it forms a perfect protection to the horses neck, preventin git from being rubbed, and against undue pressure of the points of the collar.
The extension on the lower part of the looking device E is either cast integral with the locking device as shown, or-obviously may be formed of a separate piece and joined to the locking device in any suitable manner. This extension on the locking device somewhat resembles a staple and has a cross bar 2'. In use the neck yoke strap is buckled around the bar j and the belly-band strap is buckled around the bar 11. This device is compact, durable, and convenient, and is inexpensive.
Having thus fully described iny improvements, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combined collar and hames, having a locking device on the lower-ends of said hames provided with means for" receiving the neck yoke and belly band straps; protecting plates having flanges fandholesl for connecting them to the said hames; a series of holes at or near the upper ends of the hames; a yoke having elongated portions gand a series of holes in said portions adapting the yoke to be adj ustably connected with said hames, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
