Description
J. L. BEAM.
ADJUSTABLE COLLAR.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.8, 1919.
Patented July 27, 1920.
Iv-mm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. BEAM, 0]? AXTELL, KANSAS.
ADJUSTABLE COLLAR.
Application filed August 8, 1919. Serial No. 316,151.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN L. BEAM, a cit1 zen of the United States, residing at Axtell, in the county of Marshall and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Collar, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in harness, and more particularly to the collar construction thereof.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an adjustable collar, capable of being expanded and contracted to fit animals of various sizes.
It is of course known that horse collars,
are manufactured in standard sizes, and it is obvious that these collars do not always fit, to the comfort of the animal wearing the same, with the result that the animals neck becomes bruised and sore, rendering the animal temporarily incapacitated for further work. A further object of the invention is to provide a collar capable of a fine adjustment, thereby insuring an exact fit to the animals neck wearing the same, thus eliminating unnecessary rubbing between the collar and neck of the user.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring now to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a bottom plan view of a portion of a collar having my invention attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the buckle used in connection with my invention.
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of the buckle, and;
Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Having reference to the drawing in detail, the collar as shown includes the opposed sections 1 and 2, the upper ends thereof being pivotally connected together by the usual and well known hook and loop connection, not shown, the lower ends thereof being split to provide the end members 3 and 4.
The end 3, is formed into a tongue member 3 provided with a plurality of openings 4 disposed in spaced relation throughout the length of the tongue 3, the opposed end 4 of the collar section 2, has secured thereto the permanent buckle member 5, which includes a base 6 provided with openings 7 through which pass rivets or similar secur- 1ng means 8.
Adjacent the forward end of the buckle 5, is a right angular loop section 9 of a length equal to the length of the base 6, said loop member having an offset section 10 formed integral and adapted to provide a clearance for the usual connecting strap of phe hames, which are supported by the col- Formed integral with the opposite end of the buckle 5, and spaced from each other, are the upwardly extending lugs 11, said lugs extending upwardly and terminating on a plane with the top of loop member 9.
As shown, the buckle member 5 is secured to one of the collar sections, the opposing end of the adjacent collar section, or tongue being inserted through the loop section 9, and the proper openings 4' thereof being positioned over the lugs 11, for securing the lower ends of the collar sections in their proper adjusted positions.
It will be seen that the hames, not shown, but which are positioned over, and carried by the collar, may be removed simultaneously with the collar, thereby obviating the necessity for removing the collar and hames separately.
From the foregoing it is obvious that a collar constructed in accordance with the present invention may be used on various sized horses, with a perfect fit, due to the fact that the sections thereof may be expanded or contracted to the proper fit, around ahorses neck.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In an adjustable collar, opposed padded the loop and engage over the lugs for hohlas my own, I have hereto uflixed my signaing the tongue Within the loop, and the ture in the presence of two Witnesses. upper ends of the lugs terminating at points above the plane of the lower edge of'the JOHN BEAM lopp to normally prevent displacement of Witnesses: the tongue. GEO. W. REED,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing MARJORIE Gnoss.
