Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
NATHL. B. WEBBEB, OF PAOLl, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND THOS. B. JACKSON, OF ORANGE COUNTY, INDIANA.
WASHING-MACHINE AND WRINGER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,684, dated August 29, 1865.
To all whom fit may concern: l
Beit known that I, NATEANIEL B. WEE- BER, of Paoli, Orange county, State ot' Indiana, have invented a new and useful Machine for Washing and Tringing Clothes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction, as follows:
A is a cylinder, ten, eleven, or twelve inches long, and ten, eleven, or twelve inches diameter, which cylinder A is made to revolve on an axle by means of a crank, B. In each end ot' the cylinder is inserted a spring, C, having the direction from center to circumference and connecting with a slide, D, at the circumference, which slide is let into the surface of the cylinder and made to press against a shoulder in the cylinder for the purpose oi' holding the articles by pressure between the slide and shoulder while washing. I next construct two side pieces, E, which are to be placed one at each end ot' the cylinder. Between these pieces I insert ten or twelve rollers, F, in a circle, so as to nearly fit the cylinder, which rollers F revolve in the side pieces by means of gudgeons, the side pieces being held together by iour pieces, G, extending from one to the other and through them, and when fastened retain them in their proper places and distance from each other. Each gudgeon of the cylinder is made to pass through a slide, H, for the purpose ot'raising or lowering, in order to press the cylinder against the rollers, as circumstances may require, and which slides are attached to the outside of the side pieces by means of cleats I, between which they slide up and down, being retained in place hy means ot' brass buttons J attached to the cleats I.
The slides aremovedup and down by means ot' levers K and pulleys L, the pulleys being attached to the slides by a small chain, M, the ends of which fasten to each end ot' the slide H, and in the middle attached to the pulley L, there being a pulley and lever on each side, and connected together by means of a handle, N, ou the ends of the levers K, extending from side to side, the pulleys acting on an axis passing through the cleats I and side pieces horizontally.
At the front is a small roller, P, which is for the purpose ot' pressing the water out of the articles when washed and while washing by being'forced against the cylinder by means of slides H, cleats I pulleys L. lever K, and handle N, precisely as described for the cylinder, but moving horizontally instead of vertically.
What -I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The slides H, cleats I, chains M, pulleys L, and roller P, when arranged and combined as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
NATHL. B. WEBBER. Attest:
