IMPROVED WASHING MACHINE.

Be it known that I, JOHN B. FRANCIS, of Barnesville, Belmont county, and State of Ohio, have invented anew and useful Improvement in a Washing Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, consisting of a water-box in form of a half circle, composed of wood in wholeor in part, or of any suitable material, in which is hung a uted concave wash-board. consisting:r of a series or" llutcs or half-circular strips, attached by screws or otherwise to a series of jointed or hinged strips, B, ol' brass, copper, iron, or any other suitable material, of any desired length to vary according to the size or capacity of machine constructed or desired. Said concave to be made and hung in thc water-box A, as seen in the drawing, to an adjustable frame attached to the sides of the waterbox by four pivots with screw and nut at a proper distance from the ends of said frame. or level', say two-thirds of length ot' level' above pivots, said levers marked O O and E E, with a crcsspiece from top of lever O O fastened at the ends, to which is hung or attached, (by means of continuation of the aforesaid hinged or jointed straps,) one end of said concave waslnboard, the other end of said adjustable concave being attached by means of said continuation straps to rings` and cords attached to a rockshaft or roller inserted and madeto revolve in the upper ends of levers E E, (or adjustable frame.) On the one end of said rock-shaft is attached a pulley, F, with weight and cord for the purpose, in connection with said adjustable levers O O and E E, of adjusting the concavity of thenuted wash-board, either to increase or lessen the friction on the goods or material to be washed, or regulate the capacity of the machine. In said water-box`, equidistant from the ends, is hung a lnted cylinder, H, on a shaft with a crank, K, said cylinder to be regulated in diameterV and length to suit the width, depth, and length of water-box, said cylinder and concave to be made of wood, metal, gum, or any other suitable material. Said pulley on end of rock-shaft is .perforated with holes in which is inserted a pin to prevent the concave from coming too close to the cylinder when in operation. The cords to which the ends of the concave wash-board is fastened are wound around the rock-shaft S, so that the downward pressure on the concave wash-board wiil unroll the cord, and the weight hung on t-he pu'lley will rise, and soon as the pressure on the board is removed the weight will descend to its former position, the pin inserted in the pulley stopping it at that exact point.

The combination and arrangement of the adjustable and jointed or hinged concave wash-board H, and application thereof to the cylinder H, by means of self-adjusting rock-shaft S, cords, weight, and pulley F, in connection with the adjustable levers O O and E E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
