Description
@@tlnit '51am @sont www Lette/rs Patent No. 90,431, dated May 25, 1869.
IMPROVED HAY AND COTTON-PRESS.
The Schedule referred to in these LettersPatent and makingpart of the same.
To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, LEVI DEDERICK, of the city.
' county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hay and Cotton-Press; and I do hereby declare that the following is a f'ull, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The ligure is a side view of my-improved press, partly in section, to show the construction. i
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of hay, cotton, and other baling-presses, so as to make them more convenient and effective in operation, the follower being made to move up and down with a uniform movement in all its parts, and with increased power as the bale is compressed more and more; and
It consists in the construction and combination of various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the frame of the press; B is the box or chamher, in which the material to be pressed is placed; and C is the cover; which said parts are constructed and .arranged in the ordinary manner.
D is the follower, which is placed in the lower part of the box or chamber B, and to the cross-bars or frame of which are pivoted the inner ends of the levers E, which pass in through slots inthe sides of the box B, andby means of which power is applied to said follower D.
The inner ends of the levers E are enlarged and rounded off, as shown in the figure, and are connected to each other by the chain or chains and bar F, one end otl each ol which is attached to the upper side of the end ot one of said levers, and to the lower side of the ,end oi' the other lever, as shown in the figure, so that it will be impossible for one oi' the said levers to move without moving the other level' at the same time and in the same direction.
By this means, should the power be applied unequally to the two levers, or should all the power he applied to one of said levers, they will both move to.- gether, and will carry the follower D up horizontally, pressing the material equally' and evenly.
The outer parts ot' the levers E are connected with the upper part ofthe frame A by the bar or bars and chains G, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the upper parts of the frame A, and the lower parts of which are branched, the 'ends of said branched parts being connected with the outer parts of the said levers, as shown in the figure.
In' case the connections G are made in the form of bars, they should be jointed at or near their branching point, as shown in the ligure, so as to better and more firmly support and steady the said levers while being acted upon by the power.
H is the rope, one end of which is securely attached to the frame A of the press, and the other end of which is connected with the capstan or other power by which the press is operated.
The rope H, from itspoint of attachment, passes beneath the roller or pulley I, pivoted to the follower D, below the pivoting points of the levers E, beneath the roller or pulley J, pivoted to the under side of one ofthe levers E, near its middle part, around the roller follower D by the upward pressure of the rope H upon the roller or pulley I, and then upon the pulleys or rollers J, the jointed flexible bars or chainsG at the sametime allowing the outer ends of the levers E to be drawn slightly downward by the action of the said rope H upon the pulleys or rollers K, until the inner ends ot the said levers E havebeen raised first to and then above the level of the outer'ends of the said levers E.
Then, as the application of the power is continued, the outer ends of the levers E are drawn inward, the pulleys or rollers I and J being raised from the said rope H, raising the follower D with a force, increasing more and more as the levers E approach nearer to a vertical Y position, until the material has been compressed to a bale of the desired dimensions.
I claim as new, and desire to secureV by Letters Patentj l. The arrangement ofthe chains and bars F, with reference to the inner ends of the pointed levers E, as herein described, for the purpose speciied. y
`2. Thearrangement otl the jointed or flexible con necting-bars orchains G and levers E, with-reference to each other and the frame A, as herein described, for the purpose specified. t
The above speciticaton of my invention, signed by me, this 30th day of December, 1868.
LEVI DEDERIOK.
