TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JACKSON GORHAM, of Bairdstown, in the county of Oglethorpe, and State of Georgia, have invented a new and improved Ealing-Press; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distingushedfrom all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
This invention relates to a new and improved heling-press, of that class in which the platen is operated by means of levers arranged on the toggle principle.
The invention consists in a modification of the construction of the arms of the levers, and also in a novel manner of attaching the rope of the levers to the operating ordriving-shaft, whereby certain advantages are obtained, as will be -hereinafter set forth. In the accompanying sheet of drawings-'- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my invention taken in the line sv, iig. i2.
Figure 2, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line y y, tig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. I
A represents the framing of the press, which may be constructed in the usual or any proper manner, and B is the press-box, fittcdin theframing in a secure manner. In the lower part/'f the framing A there is placed transversely a shaft, C, having on one end of it a pulley, D, to which, at its periphery, a rope, E, is attached, said rope being connected to a capstan, F. G is a platen, which works within the pressb0x B, and has the upper ends ot' two levers, II II, attached to its under side by hinges or joints a a, as shown clearly in tig. 1. 'Ihc levers II II are each pivoted to the upper end of an arm, I, and these arms are constructed in the form of trames, as shown clearly in iig. 2, the frames being composed of two side pieces, b b, connected by cross-bars e,
and gradually increasing in width from their upper to their lower ends, as also shown clearly in fig. 2, so that considerable more space is allowed or obtained between the lower parts of the side pieces b I) than at the upper ends ofthe same. The lower ends of the arms or frames I rest or bear in grooves el d, in the base of the framing' A. J is a rope, the ends of which are firmly attached to the lower cross-bar c of the arms or frames I. This rope extends around pulleys e in the lower ends of the levers II, and passes through holes f, made in the shaft C, as shown clearly in tig. 2.
The operation of the press, so far` as the mere movement of the parts is concerned, is the same as others of a similar class, the platen Gbeing raised by turning the capstan F, so as to unwind the rope E from the pulley l), and thereby wind the'rope J upon the shaft C, which causes the lower ends of the' levers II II to be drawn towards cach other.
By having the arms or frames I constructed so as to increase in width from their upper te their lower ends, as shown in figg, ample space is allowed the rope J to wind around the shaft O 'without doubling-a contingency of not unfrequent occurrence in those presses which have the arms 'or frames I constructed with parallel sides.
By attaching the rope J to the shaft C, 11s-shown, the rope passing through the holes f, the rope is allowed to adjust itself, so that the tension will be equal at both sides of shaft O, and the platen G will consequently belmoved upward within the` press-box in a horizontal position, andthe platen mudo to press uniformly on or against the whole surface of the bottom of the material in the press-box, and rectangular bales formed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arms I, constructed as described, having diverging side pieces b l), the bottoms of said-arms resting in grooves of thc framing el, and attached to the ends of the rope J which passes over the pulleys c, in the end of thelever II, to the shaft C, all arranged and operating as herein described.
JACKSON GORHAM.
