IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,314, dated July 23, 1872.

Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machine, invented by JOHN G. OHAsE,of Monticello, in the couna ty of Wright andState of Minnesota.

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved machine, partly in section, to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, parts being brokenaway to show the construction.

My invention has for its objectto furnish an improved washing-machine, simple in construction, compact, and without frame-work to get in the way of the person using it, and

which will allow the small rollers to be conveniently unshipped when desired, and adjusted in any desired position, according to the work to be done, and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts I of the machine, as hereinafter more fully described. A is the large roller, which is corrugated,

" and which I prefer to make about five and-a half inches in diameter, and seventeen inches long. B are the small rollers, four or more of whichare used, and: which I prefer to make about oneand ahalf inch in diameter and seventeen inches long. The journals of the rollers AB revolve in head-blocks, which are made in three pieces, 0-D E. The journals of the; large roller Apass'through and revolve in the. pieces 0 D, which are secured to each other by screws or bolts. The journals of the' small rollers B revolve in the piece E, which sitsloosely upon the piece D,

and is connected with it by dowel or guidepins F. The piece G is slotted to receive the spring G, the lower endof which is attached to a ring, through which the journal of the roller A passes. The upper endof the spring G is provided with a hook or pin to take hold of a catch attached to the outer side of the movable piece E. Bythis, arrangement the springs G can be conveniently detached from the pieces E to allow the small rollers B to be unshipped when desired. H I are two cups, fitting intoeach other, one of which,

- asH, is securely attached to the outer side of the outer piece 0 of the head-blocks G E, and through the centers of both of which pass the journals of theroller A. To the movable cup I are attached two outwardly projecting arms, J, one upon each side of the journal of the roller A, and the outer ends of which are connected by a bar or yoke, K,

through the center of which the journal of the roller A passes. .The arms J and the journals of the roller A rest in notches in ,the upper edge of the tub L, where they are secured in place by a stirrup, M, which passes beneath a lug, N, secured to the side of the tub L. The ends of the stirrups M slide upon the arms J, to which they are secured by setscrews 0, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4. The cups H I are connected with each other adjustably by pins P, which pass through holes in the said cups, several holes being formed to receive the said pins, so that the said cups H I maybe adjusted into any desired position with respect to each other. This construction enables the small rollers B to be adjusted above the roller A, or below it, or in any position between these points, as may be desired. j i

If desired, the head-block O D E may be extended, and a second set of small rollers, B, placed upon the other side of the cylinder A In washing long or large articles both sets of rollers, B, may be used. In washing small articles only one set of rollers needbe used. When two sets of rollers, B, are used they may be adjusted in anydesired position; or one set may be turned downward to do the washing, and the other set turned upward to act as a wringer.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the cups H I, arms J, head-blocks C DE, and rollers A B, substantially as shown and described.

2. The stirrups M and lugs N, in combination with the arms J and cups H I, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set-forth.
