UNITE STATES ATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON L. POLOOK, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
SUSPENSORY APPLIANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,747, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filedPebruary 9. 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SOLOMON L. POLOOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented'new and useful Improvements in Suspensory Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of appliances used in the treatment of strictures, and the various diseases of -the male organs of generation, in which a supportor suspensory attachment for the scrotum and its contents is essential.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide a support, for this purpose, which shall have a simple and inexpensive construction and be capable of easy and speedy application and removal, whereby the employment of a more or less complicated series of straps is avoided and a natural and healthful support maintained under all conditions.
It is mypurpose, also, to combine with a suspensory appliance of the kind specified, a detachable receptacle for the male organ of generation, whereby the linen and clothing are preserved from contamination and soiling, during the treatment of venereal and other diseases in which secretions are formed from inflamed mucous tracts, or excoriations, to enable the user to replace said receptacle, at frequent intervals, by one which is new and unsoiled, with the minimum expenditure of time, trouble and expense.
The invention consists for these purposes in the novel features of construction and new combinations of parts hereinafter fully set forth and then definitely pointed out and defined in the claims following this description.
To enable others to fully understand and to make, construct and use my said invention I will now describe the same in detail, reference being had for this purpose to the drawings accompanying this application, in which:-
Figure 1, is a frontelevation of a suspensory attachment constructed in accordance with my invention, the detachable receptacle being removed. Fig. 2, is a view showing the opposite, or rear face of the same. Fig. 3, is a detail view, showing the same parts in side view, or edge-elevation, with the detach,-
able receptacle in place. Fig. 4, is a detail Serial No. 461,638- (No model.)
the front piece, at or near the corners, are attached loops 2, formed of tape, or. other suitable material, and adapted to receive ordinary rubber bands, or elastics 3, connected by a slip-knot, said elastics being. fastened upon the buttons which hold the suspender-ends upon each side, thereby drawing the top of the front piece 1 smoothly against the abdomen and also giving ample, but elastic support to the suspensory attachment. In the central vertical line of the front-piece 1, in the lower half thereof, is formed an opening 4, which will admit the phallus of the male, the edges of said opening being bound, or
hemmed. At suitable intervals around this opening are attached loops 5, preferably formed of short, narrow strips of suitable fabric, doubled in the middle and stitched through the edges upon the front and near the margin of the opening 4. These loops 5 serve as attachments for a running string 6.
The receptacle for the phallus is composed of a substantially rectangular piece of linen, or other suitable fabric 7, provided upon one end with a running-string 8, and upon the other end with a series of loops 9 arranged at such intervals as to alternate with the loops 5. The running string 6, lying in the loops last named, passes also through the loops 9, thereby drawing the attached end of the'fabric 7, into substantially circular form and holding it closely around the edge of the opening 4. By drawing the other running string 8 the other end is gathered closely together and the attached piece is converted into a form sufficiently approximating a bag for all the purposes in view. Against the rearward face of the front part 1, is laid a piece of suitable fabric out nearly in the form of the letter U,its outline being of such form and dimensions as to substantially coin- I cide with the outline of the front piece. The
two parts are united by stitching along their outer edges, or near the same, leaving the inner edges detached, the space between the two parts forming a sufficient support for the testicles.
The attachment 7 can obviously be removed as often as necessary and a new one attached, the simplicity of construction rendering the expense of such removal insignificant.
What I claim is- 1. A suspensory attachment consisting of a front and rear portion of suitable fabric, the latter of which is approximately U shaped, and laid flat upon the'ot-her and attached thereto along the coinciding outer edges of both, the inner edge of the U-shaped portion being unattached to permit access to the space between said piece and the front p0rtion,and a removable attachment, connected to the able attachment consisting of a portion offabric having loops at one end alternating with those aroundt'ne circular opening, a drawing stringrunning through both series of loops and "a second drawing string in the free end, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set .my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SOLOMON L. POLOOK. l/Vituesses:
