Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1917.
Application filed November 2, 1915. Serial No. 59,184.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, ALFRED M. JoNns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Surgical Appliances; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in surgical appliances and particularly to appliances for. use in treating patients in hospitals, san'atoriums, and the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provi e an appliance which is intended to treat patients for the purpose of protecting them from practising masturbation or selfabuse.
Another object is to provide a restraining device of this character which will protect the patient from self-abuse, and at the same time permit the patient freedom of urination and evacuation.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken 1n connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the appliance.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation Fig. 3 is a line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal line H of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a front elevation pliance worn by a female. 7
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5; and
Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a modified form of garment for a female.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents a bifurcated nether garment which is formed of any suitable strong 'material, such as canvas, leather or the like. The rear of the garment is split verticall as at 11 to permit of evacuation by the pati nt. The garment is provided with a belt 12, to which are secured the suspenders 13 engaging over the shoulders of the patient, and provided with a breast strap 14 and a back strap 15 to preof the appliance.
sectional view on the of the apa flexible wire vertical sectional view on the p i with a stlfi' ring 27 WhlCh produces an openvent the patient from pushing the suspenders down from the shoulders. In the seams of the belt are sewed the chain 12. Additional loose straps l6 depend from the shoulders of the suspenders, and have on their lower ends the wrist straps or cufi's 17 for restraining the patients hands. An enlarged opening 18 is formed in the front of the garment, and over this opening is removably secured a patch formed of canvas or leather, as shown at '19, this patch being reinforced by screen 20. In the patch is formed an opening 21, and permanently secured over this opening is a soft rubber pouch 22,- which depends in the front -of the garment and is adapted to contain the penis and testicles of the inale. This pouch may be reinforced with wire mesh, if desired. Above the patch is secured a flap 23, which is adapted to be lowered in position to cover the rubber pouch, but may be easily and quickly raised when the patch is to be removed for cleaning purposes. This flap also protectsthe rubber pouch from wear by frictional contact with the outside clothing. The overlapping edges of the rear split of the garment are reinforced with wire 24, and prevents the patient from getting his or her hand into the garment. The belt of the garment is open at one side, as at 25, and is provided with, a lock 26, thus preventing any possibility of removal of the garment by the patient. I
The end of the rubber pouch is provided ing 28 through which urine is discharged. This ring is of such diameter that the patient cannot get his or her finger therem.
In the device used on females, the construction is practically the same as that just described for the males, except that the rubber pouch 22 is not quite so deep, and 1s considerably wider, serving as a bag to receive urine. If desired, this-rubber pouch may be dispensed with and an open wire mesh pouch substituted through which the urine can pass, as shown at 31 in Fig. 7.
The lower ends of. the legs 29 of the garment are provided with comparatively tlght bands 30, the same being tight enough to prevent the entrance of the hand by the patient, while at the same time loose enough for the comfort of the wearer. In the seam of the band is sewed a chain 30.
' The garmentand the suspender straps are reinforced with woven wire fabric 32. This reinforcement insures against the possibilitybf the patient forcing an opening through which to insert the hand.
What is claimed is:
1. A surgical appliance comprising a bifurcated nether garment formed of flexible wire screen covered with canvas, suspenders for the suspension of the garment, the rear of the garment being split vertically and having reinforcements in the edges thereof, a removable flexible pouch carried at the front of the garment, and a movable flap secured to the garment above the pouch and depending thereover to protect the pouch from the rubbing Wear of the outer garments of the wearer.
2. A surgical appliance comprising a bifurcated nether garment, means for suspending the same on the patient, a removable member on the front of the garment, a
soft rubber pouch carried by the removable non-elastic belt on the upper end of the garment.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
ALFRED M. JONES.
