This invention relates generally to a surgical garment.

In particular the invention is directed to, and it is an important object to provide, a colostomy garment of novel design.

Another major object of the invention is to provide a colostomy garment which includes a novel drain bag assembly for reception of the fecal matter or excreta which flows from the colostomy opening in the abdomen; the arrangejment being such that the bag maybe removed,

cleaned, and replaced, readily and with great convenience; or a new, separate bag may be atmunicating withan aperture in said panel which surrounds the colostomy opening.

An additional object of the invention is to provide a colostomy garment which is not bulky and thus capable of being worn under the clothing with a minimum of discomfort and without causing the clothing to bulge perceptibly.

Other objects of the'invention are to provide a colostomy garment which is sanitary, non chafing, non-irritating, and leak proof.

A separate object of the invention is to provide a colostomy garment which does not impose any undesirable strain on the colostomy opening.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a colostomy garment which is designed for ease and economy of manufacture.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a practical and reliable colostomy garment, and one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.

These objects are accomplished by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.

In the drawings:

Fig. l is a perspective view of the colostomy garment as in use.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the front panel detached, showing a modified type of drain bag.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, and at present to Figs. 1 and 2, the colostomy garment comprises a surgical belt I of substantial width, which belt may be manufactured in the nature of a girdle or corset; being plain fabric or fabric plus elastic, as desired, and in either case readily washable.

At the front, and in the zone of the colostomy opening, the surgical belt I includes an initially separate front panel! of washable fabric; such front panel 2 being detachably secured into the belt I by cooperating transverse rows of hooks 3 and eyes 4 at adjacent ends of said front panel and belt. At one end there are two or more rows of the eyes 4 in spaced relation circumferentially of the garment, whereby the related row of hooks 3 may engage with any selected one of the rows of eyes 4, depending on the desired tension or flt of the garment. With this arrangement the garment may be made to tightly fit about the persons body, yet the front panel 2 is quickly and readily detachable from the remainder of the garment when the occasion demands.

. The detachable front panel 2 is formed, intermediate itsupper and lower edges, with a circular aperture 5 adapted to register with the colostomy opening but being of somewhat greater size.

7 A drain bag 6 preferably of a strong tear-proof and moisture-proof flexible sheet material, is disfront wall 1 anda rear wall 8.

At its upper end the rear wall 8 of the drain bag 6 is secured to the upper portion of the front panel 2 by an attachment tape 9.

The rear wall 8 is formed with an opening 10 which matches the aperture 5 in the front panel, and an adjacent portion of said rear wall 8 is turned through the aperture 5 and formed as a slightly rearwardly protruding sealing collar II.

The front wall 1 is formed, adjacent the top portion thereof and directly ahead of .the opening ill, with several spaced pleats [2 which extend lengthwise of the bag, and whose purpose is to cause said front wall I to stand open sufficient to prevent the same from blocking said opening.

At its lower end the drain bag 6 is formed with a bottom discharge neck I3 which is normally drawn closed by a tie string 14.

When the above described colostomy garment is in use it encircles the body in the manner shown in Fig. 1, and at which time the rows of books 3 and rows of eyes 4 are engaged to maintain the front panel 2 in place. With the front panel 2 in place the sealing collar ill encircles the colostomy opening and bears against the adjacent portion of the abdomen in relatively tight sealing, but comfortable relation.

The fecal matter which flows from'the colostomy opening delivers through the collar I l into the bag e, where it is maintained for subsequent disposal. By reason of the particular design of the garment, it may be wornunder the clothing with a minimum of discomfort and without chafing or irritating.

When necessary the front panel 2 is readily detached from the belt I for emptying and washing of the drain bag 8, which washing is accomplished by untying the string l4 and flushing water through said ba and out of the then open discharge neck l3. As so emptied and cleaned, the front panel 2 and its drain bag 6 may be replaced; i. e. reconnected with the belt.

To the end that the requisite surgical'dressing may be maintained over the anus after the tab (not shown) depends from the rear of the belt I; the surgical dressing being connected at corresponding ends to said tabs by pinning or otherwise.

In .the embodiment of Fig. 3 the front panel I6 is constructed in the same manner as the panel 2 of Fig. l, but here the drain bag 11,

though similarly mounted, is closed at its lower end, as'at Hi; this embodiment being preferred for certain types of wear. With this embodiment'the drain bag I! may be turned inside out for the purpose of emptying and washing the same.

liable, and comfortable garment for colostomy patients, being suitable for use by such a patient during the period of convalescence, as well as for use thereafter. The garment is especially desirable due to its flexibility and ease of changing the detachable front panel, together with the connected drain bag.

While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the surgical garment, still in practice such deviations therefrom may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, the following is claimed as new and useful, and upon which Letters Patent are desired:

l. A colostomy garment comprising a relatively "wide belt adapted to encircle the body of a colostomy patient, said belt including a detachable panel at the front in the zone of the colostomy opening, the panel having an aperture adapted to register with the colostomy opening, a drain bag of flexible material disposed in front of the detachable panel, the bag including a. front and a rear ,wall, the latter being secured adjacent the top to the panel and below the point of securing having an opening'matching said aperture in the panel, and means securing the back wall and panel together about said matching opening and aperture.

2. A colostomy garment comprising a relatively wide belt adapted to encircle the body of a colostomy patient, said belt including a detachable panel at the front in the zone of the colostomy opening, the panelhaving an aperture adapted to register with the colostomy opening, a drain REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
