REVERSIBLE-HEAD BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,417, dated May 2, 1893.

I To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. KLEBES, of North Attleb0rongh,in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible-Head Buttons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification;

This invention relates to that class of buttons used to fasten collars, cuffs, and for other like purposes in which. a button is usually required to be ornamental as well as useful. Its object is to produce a button with a head that can be reversed upon its post. so that what was the under side will be the upper side, and show a different style of ornamentation.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the button, complete. Fig. 2 shows a vertical cross-section on line 00, 00, Fig. 4. Fig. 3shows the foot and post on which'the head is held. Fig. 4 represents one side of the head, and Fig. 5 the other side. Fig. 6 is an inner plate that covers the locking devices. Fig. 7 is an enlarged top view of the head of the button with the outer and the inner plate removed, showing the lockingdevices. Fig. 8 is a separate view of one of the bolts. Fig. 9 is one of the inner plates.

This button consists of a head 0, having an opening through it, a post h, the top of which is made so as to pass through the head from either side, and a foot 7'. The head cis made of two hollow plates secured together at their edges in the usual way of turning the edge of one over the edge or flange of the other, and the devices for holding the head on the post h, are inclosed between these two plates. The plate Z, has two projections 0, s, raised on its surface by swaging, forming a channel between them in which the bolts a, a, slide. These bolts are alike in every respect, and have their inner ends carried around the opening 'v, in a hooked form to catch theirinner edges into a groove or recess i, made around the post h. (See Fig. 3.) The outer ends 01, of the bolts, are narrowed down to pass and project a little way through openings in the upturned edge of the plates 6, c'. Notches are made in the sides of the bolts (1, to receive the ends of a curved spring p, which is made expansive to throw the two bolts outward and hold their inner edges in.

A plain plate n, is placed over the bolts and rests on the projections o, s, which hold it up clear of the bolts so that they will slide freely under it, but cannot be moved out of place. The two outside plates 6, 2', are intended to be ornamented in different styles, as, for instance, on Figs. 4 and 5, or in other desirable ways. By compressing between the thumb and fore finger, the two outer ends 01, of the bolts that project through the sides of the head, the inner ends of those bolts will be pushed out of the groove in the post, and the head 0, can then be taken ofi of the post, turned and again put on, with the other side of the head out. The end of the post that projects through the head can have a small stone set in it, to add to the effect and partially conceal its purpose.
