' J.. H. CARTER.
NEUKTIE FASTENING.
,No. 364,087. Patented May 31, 1887.
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES v UNITE STATES PATENT OFF CE.
JAMES HOWARD CARTER, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
NECKTIE-FQASVTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,087, dated May 31,1887.
Application filed March 3, 1887.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES HOWARD CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, in thecounty of Philadel phia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt-Collar and Tie Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in necktiefastenings, and seeks to provide a simple inexpensive construction by which the necktie may be quickly and securely fastened, so it may be easily unfastened, as will be described.
The invention consists in certain novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and specified.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the invention as in use. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively perspective and seetional'views of the necktie or cravat shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows a different style of cravat, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the button.
The button A is of the separable variety, and has a head, 1, which may bejeweled or orua' mented in any suitable manner, and a shank, 2,which latter is preferably formed non-circular in cross-section,for the purpose most clearly described hereinafter.
The necktie or cravat B has an opening, 0, formed'entirely through it and opening out of its front side. This opening is by preference re-enforced'by a metal protector, D,which may be applied after the fashion of a lacing-eyelet. The opening 0, as will be seen, is, like shank 2, made non-circular, and conforms to and is formed to fit over the said shank. Byreason of the non-circular form of the shank and opening, the necktie, when secured on such shank,
will be held from twistingand turning thereon without the intervention of pins or other supplemental fastenings.
Manifest-1y the cravat or necktie may be of any suitable form or style.
By preference the cravat may be formed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, with a front or main. portion and a back plate cbnnected at its upper end with the upper end of the main portion and detached or detachable at other points from said main portion. This back plate is provided, preferably, with a plurality of openings, 0,which may be formed and re-enforced Serial No. 239,619. (No model.)
register with the opening G,the portion of necktie exposed above opening 0 may be varied and the necktie be set higher or lower, as desired. It will also be understood that by first using the necktie high,by adjusting the lower openings Gin register with openingG, the necktie, I
when worn, may, by bringing the upper opening 0 in register with opening 0, be adjusted to hide such worn portion and present a'new surface for wear, thus improving the appearance of the cravat. In use, it will be understood, the button may be applied to the collar and shirt and its head removed, the cravat be then slipped onthe shank 2 and the head replaced, when the cravat will be fastened as shown in Fig. 1.
The button-head forms a handsome ornament for'the cravat, serving as a substitute for the ordinary scarf-pin and avoiding the wear and damage to'the necktie resulting from the application of a scarfpiu.
In my improvement, therefore, the button and as a substitute for the scarf-pin, and performs each of said offices equally as well as if it wereused for that alone.
I claim- 1. A necktie having a front or main portion and a back plate connected at its upper edge to the upper edge of such main portion, and
serves to secure the collar, fasten the necktie,
having openings formed through such front portion and back plate, substantially as set forth. 7 I
2. A necktie consisting of the front or main portion, having an opening, 0, formed through it, and the back plate connected with the front portion and having a'plurality of openings, 0, said back plate being movably connected with the front portion to bring any one of its openings into register with the opening of said front portion, whereby the height of the cravat may be varied, substantially as set forth.
