UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
WILLIAM W. SPEER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
PLOW ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,916, dated April 18, 1893.
' Application filed July 2, 1892. Serla1N0.4=38,806. (No model.)
To wZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. SPEER, a citizen of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in plows, and more particularly to devices for securing a cutter or colter to the beam thereon, the object of the invention being to provide means for securing a cutter or colter to a plow beam, which devices shall be of simple construction, easy and cheap to manufacture and which shall be effectual in the performance of their functions.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a view of a plow having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a face view of one of the plates. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 4 is a view of the clamp. Fig. 5 is a face view of a modified form of plate. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 93-00 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is an edge view of the plate shown in Fig. 5.
A represents a plow, to the beam B of which a plate 0 is adjustably secured, by means of bolts a, passing through elongated slots at in the plate 0 and through the beam B. The plate 0 is made, preferably, of steel and at points between its ends is bent up to produce diagonal flanges or projections D, said flanges or projections being a distance apart equal to the width of the shank c of the cutter d which it is desired to use. The shank c of the cutterd is placed in the space e between the flanges or projections D as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and is retained therein, by means of a yoke E, which embraces the beam B and passes diagonally across the stem or shank c. The ends of "the yoke E are connected by a strap E, and the free extremities of said yoke are screwthreaded for the reception of nuts f. In this manner a very simple and efficient clamp will be produced, as shown in Fig. 4.
The devices above described for securing the cutter or colter to the beam of a plow are exceedingly simple, the diagonal flanges or projections D being struck up from a plate of steel, renders the device capable of withstanding all the pressure which may be brought to bear against the cutter or colter without any possibility of the latter becoming loose; the device is cheap to manufacture and secured to a plow beam, and is effectual in the performance of its functions.
Instead of bending or striking up the dia onal flanges or projections D extending entirely across the plate 0 as above described, the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 may be adopted. In this form of the invention, pocket-shaped lugs or projections g, are struck up from the, plate 0 at diametrically opposite points, the shank of the cutter or colter being adapted to rest between said lugs or projections as shown in Fig. 5.
Other slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details of construction herein described, but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a plate having elongated slats formed therein and diagonally disposed ribs or projections formed by the displacement of a portion of the metal in the plate, of a yoke adapted to extend across the plate in an opposite direction from the direction of the ribs whereby to retain the stem of a cutter between them, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WVILLIAM W. SPEER.
