Description

I. A. WEAVER.
PLOW BREAK PIN CONSTRUCTION.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 5, 1913.

UNITED PATENT OFFICE.
IRA A. WEAVER, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE RACINE-SATTLEY COMPANY, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
PLOW-BREAK-PIN CONSTRUCTION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA A. l/VEAVER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Break- Pin Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to plows, and has particular reference to a novel break-pin for use in connection with gang-plows.
In the employment of gang-plows, par tic-ularly where such plows are connected to traction-engines, it is desirable that some construction should be adopted whereby the plow-point may be freed upon contact with a hidden obstruction such as a rock, during plowing operation. Such break-pin is shown in my prior Patent No. 1,043,27 7 of November 5, 1912. However, it has been found in practice that where a metallic break-pin is inserted in the standard with the outer ends of the pin lying in contact with a pair of plow-beams, the break-pin will not always be fractured in such manner as to permit the freeing of the standard; that is, the pin may first bend, then break with overhanging irregular ends, the pin being left in such condition that it will wedge between the two beams and prevent the freeing of the plow-body. A further common obj ect-ion is that the pin frequently breaks in the center and the ends wedge between the beams.
I have, therefore, devised a break-pin, preferably of cast-metal construction, which shall be so constructed that the break will always occur at the same point and avoid the possibility of wedging of the broken portions of the pin between the plow-beams. Such construction is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow having my novel break-pin applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of a fragment of the plow-standard, parts being considerably enlarged, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of my novel brealepin.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, it will be seen that between plowbeams 10 is mounted a plow-standard 11, the permanent connection between the parts being through bolt 12 engaging the standard through a slotted aperture 13. The

weight of the plow-body and standard is carried by a bolt 14: passing through the standard and engaging notches 15 in each of the plow-beams 10. My novel break-pin 18 adapted to pass through an aperture in the standard 11, its ends projecting beneath the plow-beams 10. This break-pin consists of a substantially circular middle-portion 16 provided with reduced flattened ends 17, such ends being apertured as at 18 to accommodate fastening-cotters. The material joining the middle and end- portions 16, 17, is considerably reduced in cross-section as at 19 to form annular-grooves, whereby the pin is weakened at these points. By this means the breakage will invariably occur at such weakened points.
It will be noted that the middle-portion 16 is of considerably less length than the width of the plow-standard 11, whereby the break in the pin occurs within the plane of the plow-standard, thus obviating the possibility of projections outside the plane of the standard which might wedge between the beams and prevent the freeing of the plowbody. The flattened portions 17 are provided in order to secure a bearing against the lower faces of the beams.
It is obvious that modifications may be made in the construction shown and such modifications are within the scope of my claims I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A break-pin for plows consisting of a body-portion provided intermediate the ends thereof with annular grooves, substantially as described.
2. A break-pin for plows consisting of a body-portion having flattened ends and a substantially circular intermediate portion, said end and intermediate portions being separated by annular grooves, substantially as described.
3. A. break-pin for plows consisting of a substantially round bar provided with annular grooves intermediate its ends, the ends of said bar being provided with transverse apertures for the accommodation of fastening-means, substantially as described.
4. In a low, the combination of a pair of beams, a p ow-standard secured thereto, and a break-pin associated with said standard and beams and adapted to normally hold said parts in operative position, said breakpin being provided with a pair of weakening-grooves intermediate its ends, whereby the point of breakage of said pin may be controlled, substantially as described.
5. In a plow, the combination of a pair of beams, a plow-standard secured thereto, and a break-pin associated with said standard and beams and adapted to normally hold said parts in operative position, said breakpin being provided with a pair of weakening-grooves intermediate its ends, the bodyportion between said grooves being of a length less than the space between said beams, whereby the point of breakage of said pin is controlled, substantially as described.
6. In a plow, the combination of a pair of beams, a plow-standard secured thereto, and a break-pin associated with said standard and beams and adapt-ed to normally hold said parts in operative position, said break-pin being provided with a pair of weakening-grooves intermediate its ends, said pin being flattened on one side at its ends to provide for a bearing against said beams, substantially as described.
7. In a plow, the combination of plowbeams and a plow-standard, a break-pin seated on said plow-standard and having portions projecting beneath said beams, said pin having an intermediate portion and flattened ends, said ends and intermediate portion being separated by annular grooves, said intermediate portion beingof a length less than the width of said plow-standard through which said pin projects, substan tially as described.
8. A metallic break-pin for plows consist ing of a body portion, said body portion being of reduced cross-sectional area at separated points in the length thereof whereby breakage of the pin is induced at such points, substantially as described.
