Be it known that I, EDWIN B. STIMPSON, of New York, in the county and Stateof New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Leggins, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in leggins as an article of manufacture.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which,

Figure l is a view of the leggin in side elevation, showing several'of the fastening devices in their fastened adjustment, one of them in released adjustment and one of the meeting edges partially broken away to show the position of the branches of the loop therein. Fig. 2 is a partial inside view of that part of the leggin to which the fastening straps are attached. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view in detail through the leggin at the point where one of the buttons or studs is secured thereto. Fig. 4 is a similar View through one of the studs showing the base or washer formed integral therewith. Fig. 5 represents the loop secured to the leggin by a short strap stitch ed to the leggin.

The meeting or overlapping edges of the leggin are represented by Aand B. A represents the edge to which the loops are attached and B represents the edge to which the fastening straps and studs or buttons are secured.

In the preferred form of my invention the loops a have their ends a turned in opposite directions and adapted to rest within a bight a formed by folding the edge A. The fold in the edge A is here shown as secured by lines of stitching a The loops a may be inserted in position by forming perforations at thepointswheretheirbranchesextend through the bight of the fold and inserting one end of the loop into one of the perforations and sliding it along within the bight until its opposite end comes opposite the other perforation, then inserting that end into the perforation and sliding the loop back again until its U shaped portion is exposed and its oppositely extending portions 0/ remain hidden within the fold. In this position it will re main until intentionally removed.

In addition to their function for holding the loops in position, the extending portions a also serve to stiffen the edge of the leggin and at the same time permit of its bending at the points intermediate of the adjacent ends of two successive loops so as to readily adjust itself to the contour of the leg.

The fastening straps are denoted by O and consist of short pliable strips of leather or other suitable material, one end of which is firmly secured to the edge 13 of the leggin and the other end is adapted to pass through the loop a and turn back to be attached to a suitable button or stud D. I utilize the stem d of the button or stud D for securing the strap 0 to the leggin at the same time that the stud itself is secured. This I accomplish as follows: The stud D is provided with a flange d at the base of its shank audits stem (1 is made sufficiently long to pass through a washer E located on the outside of the leggin, thence through the material B of the leggin itself, thence through a forelock or washer e on the inside of the leggin and, after passing through said washer E, its end is upset thereby riveting the leggin B snugly between the washers E and e and at the same time securing the stud itself in position.

The flange (1' may be extended, as shown in Fig. 4, forming in effect a washer E integral with the stud and thereby do away with the separate washer E, represented in Fig. 3. The free end of the strap is provided with one or more button holes 0 adapted to receive therethrough the head of the button or stud D.

Instead of the separate washers E one for each stud on the inside of the leggin, I may use a single elongated washer e for two or more of the studs, as represented in Fig. 2, and when such form of washer is employed, it will serve the double function of assisting in securing the stud and strap of the leggin and at the same time stiffen the edge of the leggin.
