HEAD-REST FOR CHAIRS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,617, dated April 4, 1893.

Be it known that I, JOHN L. BAKER, of Baird,

in the county of Callahan and State of Texas,

have invented a new and useful Head-Rest for Chairs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to provide an arm chair for the use of barbers or dentists, with a head rest of novel and superior construction, which will facilitate the adj ustment of the head of an occupant of the chair, and enable the same to be changed in position laterally, without raising it from the support it rests upon.

To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a chair having the improvement in position on it; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22 in Fig. 1, of the improved head rest detached, and a broken slide bar whereon the head rest is mounted.

The device is intended to take the place of the ordinary cushioned head rest provided for chairs of the class named, and comprises two rollers a, of like form rotatably mounted at their ends in a bracket frame I), which is forked so as to afiord spaced supports fol-the two rollers, that are loosely retained in connection with the bracket frame, parallel and suitably separated as indicatedin Fig.1. The bracket frame I) is mounted upon the usual or any other preferred form of slide bar b that is adapted for vertical adjustment in the back I), of the chair, as shown, or by any other preferred means, and at 19 a forwardlyflexing joint is provided for the bracket frame to permit the rollers a, to be inclined longitudinally as may be necessary for efficient service. The rollers a, are upholstered with and furnishes a yielding, comfortable support I for the head of the occupant of the chair. It will be seen that when the head rest is inuse, the head of the incumbent of the chair will lie upon the endless band 0 between the rollers, and to roll the head it is only necessary for the operator to press it slightly on either side, thereby causing the rollers to rotate and the band to be progressively moved in a direction opposite that of the pressure applied, which movement will carry the back part of the head with the moving band, and cause it to rest on its side. It is also contemplated to use three rollers by. locating one intermediately of the outer two, and pivotally support said roller on the bracket frame the same as the others; it is not thought this will add to the utility of the device and will increase the expense of production, but such a construction will fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1.
