SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4512,510, dated October 8, 1889.

Be it known that I, HERMANN KAUFMANN,

of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee,

Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the side pieces, and B C the uphol` stered head and body portion of an ordinary lounge. Secured to transverse braces D E, that connect the side pieces A of the lounge, are tapes F, the latter being interwoven by tapes G, that have their ends secured to said side pieces, these tapes serving as a support, forv the purpose to be hereinafter described. Journaled to the side pieces A at opposite ends of the lounge are rollers H, and similarly connected to the inclined portions A of said side pieces is a spindle I, the latter being hollow for at least a' portion of its length, and having a radial extension I', that is also hol-` low for at least a portion of its length. The spindle I is also provided with eyes J, to which are secured cords or tapes K, that connect with one end of ablanket L or other covering, as best illustrated in Fig. 1.

and if there is any slack in the cords or tapes K said covering will be supported on the tapes F G, although it is obvious that any other suitable support may be as readily employed.

Although I have shown and more particularly described my invention in connection with a lounge, it is obvious that the said invention may be as readily applied to chairs, car-seats, and various other devices analogous to said lounge.

By the construction above described it will be seen that any desirable amount of covering may be connected to a lounge or analo` 'gous piece of furniture so as to be readily drawn back and concealed beneath the same when not in use and as readily drawn out over the occupant of the furniture any time such covering is found desirable.

Having thus fully described inyinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

I. The combination of a lounge or analogous piece of furniture, a spindle j ournaled in the frame of the device, a blanket or analogous covering normally supported beneath the furniture, and flexible connections uniting the spindle and covering, whereby the latter may be drawn out by hand and returned to its normal position by rotation of said spindle, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of a lounge or analogous piece of furniture, a hollow spindle journaled in the frame of the device, a blanket or analogous covering normally supported beneath the furniture, flexible connections uniting the spindle and covering, and a jointed crank telescopically arranged with relation to said hollow spindle, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with alounge or analogous piece of furniture, of a hollow spindle IOO journaled in the frame of the device and provided with a radial extension, a blanket or analogous covering exibly connected to the spindle, and a jointed crank loosely arranged in said spindle and provided with a lug that engages the radial extension thereof, substantially as set forth.

4. The Combination, with a lounge or analogous piece of furniture, of a spindle journaled in the frame of the device, ablanket or analogous covering iiexibly connected to the spindle, and rollers journaled in said lounge to facilitate the movement of the covering, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination of a lounge or analogous piece of furniture, a series of tapes seenred to the frame of the device, a spindle journaled in said frame, a blanket or analogous covering,` normally supported on the tapes, and flexible connections uniting the spindle and Covering, substantially as set forth. y

G. The Combination, withalounge or analogens pieee of furniture, of a spindle journaled in the frame of the device,a blanket or analogous covering flexibly connected to the spindle, and a door connected to the foot end of said frame, substantially as set forth.
