UNITED STATES ERNST PAUL KRENKEL,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF LEIPSIO, GERMANY.
MATERIAL FOR THE IVIANUFACTURE OF TRUNKS.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,018, dated January 31, 1893.
Application filed May 19, 18921 Serial No. 433,600. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST PAUL KRENKEL, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Leipsic, Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Materials for the Manufacture of Trunks, 65o.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of the specification.
This invention relates to an improved material to be used in the manufacture of trunks, chests, music instrument cases, dac.; my obj ect being to provide a material which will 'add stability and solidity to the trunk, or upon whatever it is used.
With this object in view my invention consists in the peculiarities and combinations of parts as will be more fully set forth and described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section taken on line x-x of Fig. 1.
The reference let-terarepresents a strip or body portion of Wood,American poplar being preferably used, upon the upper face of which is secured a sheet of canvas b forming the exposed face of the truuk or chest. For the purpose of preserving the same and keeping it waterproof, I cover it with a coat of oil paint, varnish, dac., which Will tend to make it Wear Placed at intervals upon the upper surface of the Wooden plate ct, are halfround brace strips c, made preferably of rattan, or other fiexible material, running transversely to the grain of the Wooden body portion a. These strips are glued to the plate a, and the canvas spread over them, it being also glued to the body portion, thus holding the three together. The under or opposite side of the body portion a is covered with a layer of Manila or cocoa fiber d secured thereto by glue, and on this fiber is glued a layer of Chinese matting e, which gives a neat and finished appearance to the inside of the trunk. All these layers are glued together, thereby forming a very solid body which Will be tight, yet strong and durable. The staples f are driven through the material thus securely cemented together, and their ribs are bent laterallyand thence backward into the surface of the matting, which forms the interior covering. The ends are thus clinched to more securely hold the staples in place and unite the layers of material more securely together. The ends of the staples being thus forced back into the material, prevent them from catching on objects that may be brought in contact therewith.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A material for the manufacture of trunks or like articles, consisting of a body portion of wood, half-round brace strips running transversely to the grain of the body portion, an 'exterior covering of coarse material placed over said strips and body portion a iine fibrous material placed against the other side of the body portion, an interior lining of matting placed next to said fibrous material, and staples passing the Whole and distributed throughout, the inner ends being bent under and clinched, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereoflhave hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
ERNST PAUL KRENKEL.
Witnesses:
