Be it known that I, WILLIAM WALD- SCHMITT, a citizen ofthe United States, andV a resident of Brooklyn, in the county `of Kings and State of New York, have linvented certain new and useful `lmprovements in rlraveling-Bags, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements 1n traveling bags, and it consists in the novel features and structure hereinafter'des'cribed, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

rl`he object of the invention is to provide an improved traveling bag and at the same time to reduce the labor and expense of manufacturing traveling bags of the class to which my invention ertains, the bag of my invention being capa le of being manufactured at considerably less labor and expense than bags of the same general class have heretofore required, and also being of increased durability and desirability.

lt has heretofore' been customary i'f not universalin the manufacture of bags of the general character to which my invention pertains, to provide a leather or other lining which has had its parts separately sewed togetherand an exterior leather casing having its parts separately sewed together, whereas in accordance with my invention l secure together by pasting the outer vparts for the sides and ends of the bag, a filler and a lining, and fasten all of these parts 'together by single lines of sewing at they corners ofthe bag, thereby dispensing with the work of sewing the parts of the lining separately and also with the operators who have heretofore been accustomed to do that work. The bottom of my bag will preferably comprise an outer rectangular piece of vulcanized fiber, a filler and a lining, all pasted together, and the lower edge portions ofthe sides and ends of the bag will be folded under said bottom and secured Athereto by riveting. At each of the Vfour lower corners of the bag lprovide a protecting cornerpiece extending against the side, end and bottom of the bag and riveted thereto.

rlhe invention will be fully understood from the detailed description" hereinafter presented, reference being had'to'the accompanying drawings, in which:

The sides V10"ofthe bag comprise an outer leather-layer 15, an inner lining-layer 16 preferably of leather, and a filler-layer 17 preferably of vulcanized fiberor equivalent material, and these three layers are securely pasted or glued together to form what is in effect a singlethickness of material, which is thereafter suitably cut 'or :trimmed to the requisite `shape or proportions for the sides of the bag. lThe outer leather layer 15 may be in one integral piece but it is more economical in cutting the leather to. form said layer in two horizonta'lsections sewed together along their adjacent edges, as at 18.

The ends 11 of the bag comprise an outer lleather-layer 19, an inner lining-layer 20 preferably of leather, and an intermediate or filler-layer 21 preferably of vulcanized fiber or equivalent material, and these three `layers are securely pasted or glued together to form what is in eect a single thickness of material, which is thereaftersuitably cut or trimmed to the requisite shape or proportions for the ends ofthe bag. rlhe outer leather-layer -19 may be in one integral piece but it'v is` more economical 'incutting the leather to form saidlayeri-n two'horizontal sections sewed together along theirladj acent edges, as at 22; 'The upper portions of the filler-layers 21 are cut out, as indicated by theI dotted line 23`in Fig. 4, so that the thickness of the ends of the bag within the outline of said recesses will comprise only the layers 19, 20, as shown in Fig. 4, and so that thereby the upper portions of the ends of the bag may, frames 13, fold inwardly in the manner represented in Figs. 1,;2 and'3.

The bottom 12 of the bag comprises a lower layer 24C of strong vulcanized fiber, an upper layer 25 of leather and an intermediate layer 26 of vulcanized fiber, and these three layers are finally, though not initially, pasted or glued together. The strong lower layer 24 is secured along its edges by rivets, tacks or nails 27, to the lower inwardly extended edges 28 of the sides and ends of the bag, and thereafterithe layers 25, 26 pasted orglued together are glued upon the upper surface ofthev aforesaid layer 24 and cover the inner ends of said nails 27.

I provide protecting corner pieces 29 at the four vlower corners of the bag, said pieces beingsecured by nails 30 and made from durable material, such as stron leather. '.The. horizontal nails 30 extend through all the layers of the sides and ends of the bag and'at their inner ends become exposed withinthe bag, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and kthese exposedends will in the finishing of thebag preferably be concealed by :pasting small leather disks over them. The lvertical :nails 30 extend through the bottom layer 24 and their inner upper ends are concealedby'the layers 25, 26 positioned thereover.

Inf-the manufacturev ofthe bag the vertiealcorner edges thereof are secured, by single lines of sewing 31, and each of these lines of sewing vis exterior to the bag and extends through the three layers of the side andf-three'layers'of the end of the bag, the sides an'd'endszof the bag at their adjacent edges lbeing faced Y outwardly against each other and then sewedtogether. The pasting together ofthe layers of the sides and endsof the bag enable me to complete the vertical cornersof the bag by the single eX- terior lines of sewingfl, and to dispense entirely with the separate sewing together of the partscomposing the usual lining and with the-operatives who ordinarily do that work, and in addition the bag as I'construct it is more durable than bags as heretofore made and better adapted to resist the severe usage to which traveling bags are frequently suhjeeted i vWhat I claim as my invention and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is:

2. A traveling bag having a bottom, hinged-frames at its top and a handle, the sides and ends of said bag each comprising an outer leather layer, an inner leather lining layer and an intermediate vulcanized fiber layer all pasted together to form in effect a single sheet and said sides and ends at their adjoining vertical edges being faced outwardly against each other, as shown, and sewed together, whereby the exterior leather, filler and lining are secured at cach corner of the bag by an exterior line of sewing, said intermediate layer being cut out at its upper portion; substantially as set forth.

3. A traveling bag having a bottom comprising a strong piece of vulcanized fiber, a layer of vulcanized fiber thereon and a lining layer, all pasted together, and tho sides and ends of said bag each comprising an outer leather layer, an inner lining layer and an intermediate vulcanized fiber layer all pasted together to form in effect a single sheet, and said sides and ends at their lower edges being turned under and secured to said bottom and at their adjoining vertical edges being faced outwardly against each other, as shown, and sewed together, whereby the exterior leather, filler and lining are secured at each corner of the bag by an exterior-line of sewing, said intermediate layer being eut out at its upper portion; substantially as set forth.
