This invention relates to improvements in containers and, more especially, hand bags, vanity bags, boxes, and the like. For example, the invention is well suited for use in connection with the making of small attractive, neat, light, relatively inexpensive ladies hand bags, vanity boxes, purses, and thelike.

By the use of my invention, the cost of making a container of the character referred to can be materially reduced through a saving in both material and labor. A container made in accordance with my invention will also be found to be not only pleasing in appearance, but durable and strong.

Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.

In that form of device embodying the features of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing the container open; Fig. 8 is a view taken as indicated by the line 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view on an enlarged scale; Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of a portion of the frame and the box-like structure used in forming one of the sides of the container; and Fig. 6 is a broken perspective View of the metal frame.

As shown in the drawings, the container includes a metal frame comprising two inverted U-shaped

channel members

10, 10 with their lower ends hinoed together at 11, 11.

A cross-section of one of these channel members is shown in Fig. 4 and it will be seen that they have their channels 12 facing outwardly (see Fig. 5). Each side of the frame may be any shape desired, but ordinarily is substantially rectangular, as shown. If desired, each side of the frame can be providedwith tour sides to complete the rectangle. As here shown, however, l prefer to leave the bottom side open, thus forming each side of the frame in the shape of an inverted U.

Numeralrl indicates an open-sided box-like structure arranged adjacent the outer face of each frame member, the open side of each such structure facing inwardly. Each of these structures is provided with a marginal 5o rim 18a, the edge of which fits against the `frame member 10. The box-like structure 18 may be formed in any suitable manner. As here shown, I prefer to make them out of wood. The rim 1.3a may be made by gluing strips to the flat sheet.

I cover each side of the bag with a layer of flexible sheet material 14, for example, leather. This material is preferably shaped like a bag or casing to cover the shape of the box-like structure 13. It may be formed of one piece of material suitably pressed and stretched or it may be made up of several pieces sewn together. In the latter case, it may be desirable to sew the material at the edges and in such case, the edge of the boxlike member 13 is preferably beveled, as indicated by 13b, to provide space for the inwardly turned edges 14a, which are sewn together, as indicated by 15. The edge of the covering 14, as indicated by 14D, is inserted in the channel 12 of the frame 10 and a ller material 16 may be forced in to hold it in place. This ller material may include a strip of leather or other suitable material, preferably folded around a cord 16a. It iS to be understood that any suitable means may be employed for retaining the edge 14b of the covering 14a in the channel. It is not absolutely necessary to use the filler 16. If the channel is narrow enough or the material 14 thick enough, such iiller may be dispensed with. As shown, the edge of the covering 14 is inserted in the channel 12 on the three 85 sides of the Jframe. Since the lower edge of the frame is open, the lower edges of the covering 14, as indicated by 14, may be joined together or made integral across the bottom of the container. It will be Seen that by this construction, the covering of flexible material 14 serves to hold the box-like structures 13 in position adjacent the frame members. This material therefore performs the double function of enhancing the beauty of the container and also serving to hold the box-like structures 13 in place. The container, therefore, may be made in its complete form without resorting to nails, staples, or other fasteners, to hold the side members or box-like structures 13 in position with respect to the metal frame.

The interior of the bag may be lined, as desired. For example, 17 may indicate a lining material. Inside pockets and the like may also be provided of any desired form. For example, as here shown, 18 may indicate a separate pocket of well-known design fastened to the interior of the container by the fiexible folded sheets 19, and the like.

While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.

What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A container of the character described, including; a metal frame comprising two substantially rectangular channel members with their lower edges hinged together, said channel members having their channels facing outwardly; an open-sided box-like structure arranged adjacent the outer face of each frame member, the open side of each such structure facing inwardly; and a covering of flexible sheet material over each box-like structure with its edges inserted in the channel of the adjacent frame member.

2. A container of the character described, including; a metal frame comprising two inverted U-shaped channel members with their lower ends hinged together, said channel members having their channels facing outwardly; an open-sided box-like structure arranged adjacent the outer face of each frame member, the open side of each such structure facing inwardly; and a covering of flexible sheet material over each box-like structure with its edges inserted in the channel of the adjacent frame member.

3. A container as claimed in claim 1, in which the covering of flexible material assists in holding the box-like structures in position adjacent the frame members.

4. A container as claimed in claim 2, in which the covering of flexible material assists in holding the box-like structures in position adjacent the frame members.
