UNITED STATES ATENT FF ICEa LOUIS SANDERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ELIZA SANDERS, O

BAG 'SATCH EL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,495, dated November 13, 1883.
Application filed September 18, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
. Be it known'that I, LoUIs SANDERS, of the city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful-Improvements in Bags or Satchels, of which the following is a specification.
Bags or satchels for ladies use have hereto- 7 fore been made of a metallic frame, and of a body attached to the frame and provided with expansible gussets and bottom. The bottom 'was liable to sag by use, owing to the weight of the articles stored in the bag or satchel,
whereby an unsightly appearance was imparted to the same. I
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved bag or satchel in which the sagging of the bottom is prevented, and thereby a neater, stronger, and more durable bag or satchel furnished; and the invention consists of a bag or satchel having a metallic frame at the top part, and of a body having expansible side gussets and bottom, the bottom being stiffened by two or more longitudinally-hinged re-enforcing layers or sections.-
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 rep resents a perspective view of my improved bag or satchel. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in longitudinal section through the body; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the bag or satchel shown in expanded state.
Similar letters of. reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the body of a bag or satchel of that class in which the body is applied to the hinged jaws of a metallic frame, B. The body A is made of side walls, a a, folding gussets b b, and a folding bottom, (1, which latter is re-enforced by longitudinally-divided stiffening layers or sections d, of
pasteboard, leather, or other suitable material, 0 of suitable thickness. The layers or sections 11 are interposed between the exterior bottom covering and the interior lining, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The covering and lining form the hinge-connection for the intermediate longitudinal stiffening layers, at, so that they fold inwardly when the bag or satchel is empty, as shown in Fig. 1, while they are expanded to their full width, as shown in Fig. 3, when the bag is filled. Owing to the stiff- 5o ness of the bottom, the same cannot sag below the side walls of the body, as in the satchels heretofore in use. In this manner a bag or satchel of neater and more finished appearance is obtained, which is also more. durable, as the .bottom is re-enforced by the stiffeninglayers at the point where the same is most exposed to Wear. Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A bag or satchel having a metallic frame-at the upper part and a body made expansible at the sides and bottom, the bottom being reenforced by intermediate stiffening-strips arranged longitudinally side by side, between the covering and lining, forming a hinged joint between the strips along the middle line of the bottom, which permits the said strips to fold inwardly when the satchel is empty, while they cannot sag outward when it is full.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
. LOUIS SANDERS.
