BAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 28, 1913.
Application led September 12, 1910. Serial No. 581,556.
T 0 all wiz-0m z't may concern Be it known'that I, Moses H. EIsnMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bags, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to bags and more particularly to small handbags having a bottom bellows fold.
The invention seeks to provide a collapsible brace for the bellows fold of a bag which will collapse with the bellows fold when the bag is empty, but .which is provided with means for limiting its opening movement to thus prevent the sagging of the bellows fold when the bag is filled.
The invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the preferred form in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure l is a cross section of the lower portion of the handbag having a bellows fold in its bottom and provided with the improved collapsible brace, the bellows fold being shown expanded. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the bellows fold collapsed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improved brace removed from the bag. Fig. 4: is a plan view of a modification.
The bag illustrated comprises, as usual, the outer covering l and the inner lining 2, both of which are formed into a bottom bellows fold. The improved brace for the be1- lows fold comprises hinged parts which are adapted to collapse with the fold, but which are provided with means' for limiting their opening movement so that the fold cannot straighten out or sag down when the bag is filled.
In the preferred embodiment of the in vention, the brace comprises a pair of metal leaves or plates 3 hinged together at their inner adjacent edges, preferably by means of eyes l engaging a pintle rod 5. This brace is preferably secured to a stiffening strip 6 of pasteboard or heavy leather which is folded to conform with the bellows fold in the bottom of the bag and which is inserted betweenthe outer covering l of the bag and the inner lining 2. The hinged parts 3 are secured to the central fold of the stiffening strip 6 preferably by means of bent tongues 7 at the edges of the plates or leaves which extend `through openings in the stifl'ening strip and are clamped down upon the surface thereof. A portion of the stiflening strip G at the top of its central fold is preferably cut away to form an opening or slot 9 which receives the hinged connection between the plates or leaves 3. To securely hold the parts in position, the stiffening strip is fastened to the lining 2 of the bag by rows of stitches 8.
The hinge leaves are provided with means for limiting the opening movement which preferably consists of abutting portions 10 at the hinged edges thereof. These abutting portions are so arranged that in the eX- treme open position of the leaves or plates 3, they are about at right angles to each other.
It is obvious that the brace can readily collapse when the bag is empty, as shown in F ig. 2, but, when the bag is filled and the bellows fold and brace expanded, the latter prevents the bellows fold of the bag from collapsing or sagging down.
In the modified form of the invention, shown in Fig. 4, the hinge pintle 5 is extended beyond the plates or leaves 3 so that it extends nearly to the ends of the bag and serves to further strengthen the bottom fold.l
It is obvious that changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the essentials of the invention as defined in the claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bag having a bottom bellows fold between its sides, and a collapsible stiifenl ing brace for said fold comprising hinged parts provided with means for arresting the movement of said hinged parts toward a straight line position, substantially as described.
2. A bag having a bellows fold, and a collapsible stitl'ening brace for said fold comprising hinged leaves having parts at their hinged edges arranged to abut to limit the opening movement of said leaves, substantially as described.
3. A bag having a bottom bellows fold and a collapsible brace for said fold comprising a folded strip of stiffening material and hinged metal parts secured to said strip and provided with means for limiting the opening movement thereof, substantially as described.
4. A bag having a bottom bellows fold and a collapsible brace for said fold comprising a folded strip of stiffening material and a pair of hinged metal leaves having 5 tongues securing the same to said folded strip and abutting portions at their hinge edges to limit the opening movement of the fold, substantially as described.
5. A bag having a bottom bellows fold 10 and a collapsible stiening brace connected to said fold and comprising metal leaves having eyes at their inner adjacent edges and a hinge pintle extending through said eyes, said leaves having portions arranged to abut to limit the opening movement i5 thereof7 substantially as described.
