Description

J HANAN'.
HAND BAG.
APPLICATLQN FILED msc.2|. l9l5.
Patented Oct. 3, 1916.
JOE HANAN', OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
HAND-BAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1916.
Application filed December 21, 1915. Serial No. 68,081.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jon HANAN, a citi- 'zen of Russia, residing at Brooklyn, in .the
county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hand bags and the like and more particularly to the formation of extensible sides or bottoms for said hand bags.
It has for an object to provide an improved construction of hand bag for the support of a collapsible bottom or side.
A further object is the provision of a plurality of straps carried by an extensible bottom or side members for fastening to the body of the hand bag.
A further object of this invention is the provision of detachable fastening means for supporting an extensible bottom and to dispose said fastening means to have them covered by the ordinary straps commonly used on hand bags and the like.
Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claim and drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand bag constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view therethrough, showing the bottom folded or collapsed, and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the bottom extended.
In the construction of traveling bags and I the like, it is common to have an extensible portion thereof to increase the capacity of the bag but the formation of such bags has been such as to cause them to be unpopular because of the cumbersome construction and excessive weight. This invention provides for a simplified construction in which the lower portion of the side walls of the bag are formed as a bellows to collapse and these side walls support a bottom member of the ordinary construction.
When it is desired to use the hand bag in the compact form supporting members carried by the bottom, may be attached to the rigid sides of the hand bag and in this position, the ordinary fastening straps common to such hand bags cover a supplemental fastening means for the bottom.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a hand bag 10 having the usual frame 11 andv handles 12 thereon. The hand bag is further provided with the usual fastening straps 13 which are held on the bag in their proper positions as by the loops 14.
The hand bag supports the bottom 15 and this is carried by the lower edges of the side walls 16 in which the collapsible portion 17 is formed. The part 17 afiords extensible means for supporting a bottom 15 when it is desired to increase the capacity of the bag and when it is desired to use the bag in compact form, straps 18 which may be sewed or otherwise secured as at 19 are provided with fastening means 20 which coact with studs 21 carried by the side wall 16. For an ordinary sized bag it is preferred to have one strap 18 near each corner of the bag but it is understood that in case of necessity, additional straps 18 may be added.
'When the bottom has been raised to present the bag in compact form, the straps 13 may 'be buckled as in ordinary usage after the bag has been filled when these straps conceal the straps 18 from view and also cooperate in holding the coacting fastening means 20 and 21 in engagement with each other.
The bag may be provided with the ordinary lining 22 which may be fitted to the interior of the bag to properly cover the inner face of the side walls 16 in either extended or compact position and when in closed position, this lining will not present a bulky appearance.
Modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of this invention and the drawings are submitted for illustrative purposes only.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 7 An article of the class described, comprising a hand bag having portions of the lower edges of the side walls thereof foldable, a bottom carried by the lower edges of said foldable portions, said foldable portions resting upon said bottom and forming portions of the bottom of said hand bag in certain positions thereof, straps carried by said bottom along the side edges thereof spaced from the ends, coacting fastening members carried by said straps, and the side Wal Of aid. hand ag, for attachment in certain positions of the bottom with rethe Weight of the contents of the bag to pre- 10 spect to the upper portion of the hand bag, vent bulging of the sides and bottom.
bag encircling straps carried by said hand In testimony whereof I aflix my signature bag to overlie and reinforce said first menin presence of two Witnesses.
tioned straps when in attached position,
said supports for said bottom member be- JOE I-IANAN. ing so positioned as to strengthen said bot- Witnesses:
tom member in compact position, and said GEORGE L. THoM,
foldable portions also carrying portions of HUGO MooK.
