To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, PAUL J. GOLDSMITH, a citizen of the. United States, residing at New York city, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bags, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to extensible, and preferably folding bags, valises, and the like; and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel fastenin 'means for holding an extensible section 0 such a receptacle in definite relationship to another section of the same.

Another object of this invention is to so form and dispose the said fastening means as to materially strengthen the structure as a whole.-

A still further object of my invention is to so dispose the folding portions of the extensible structurethat whether the device be in extended position or otherwise, the center of gravity of the device will normally remain in a vertical line traversing the supporting member or handle.

These and other objects of my invention will be hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings which form apart hereof and in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a partial side elevation of a traveling bag constructed in accordance with the principles of m invention. Fig. 2 is a detail of a corner 0 said bag, the bottom of the bag being approximately in its extended position, and the novel fastening means being partly broken away for purposes of illustration. Fig. 3 is a detail section taken through the rear side of the bag on the line III-III of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail showing a corner of the bag, as viewed from below.

An important feature of the present invention resides in the provision of novel .means whereby two relatively movable sections of a receptacle may be held against displacement with respect to each other in a plurality of directions.

These corner pieces are preferably formed of pressed leather and extend upwardly over the vertical edges of the receptacle a relatively considerable distance, for reasons hereinafter iven. Each of these corner pieces may, i desired, be provided with ears 6, which may have secured therein the socketed elements 7 of fastening devices similar to those commonly known as glove fasteners. Upon each side of thebag adjacent the respective corners thereof are located the stud elements 8, 8', which constitute the other portions of the fasteners proper these studs 8 and 8, and the sockets 7, being preferably of any well known description and hence requiring no further description herein, except that, in general the respective elements of the fasteners used should preferably have a snap engagement with each other. The studs 8, are located above the studs 8', being secured to the relatively inflexible portions of the receptacle, while the studs 8 are preferably secured upon the flexible or folding portions 9 of said receptacle. When the extensible bottom 3 :is in its collapsed or folded position, the flexible portions 9 will be folded together so as to be substantially invisible from the outside; projecting into the interior of the receptacle; and as they are flexible, these interiorly projecting portions are not objectionable. The upper extension of each of the corner pieces affords excellent protection to the vertical edges of the bag or receptacle; and furthermore the said corner pieces perform the important function of serving as stifleningdevices, effectually preventing lateral displacement of the bottom 3 with respect to the body 1' of the bag. When the bottom is in its uppermost position, thesockets 7 may be engaged with the studs 8, thereby effectually locking the said bottom in its upper position; and when the bag is to be extended, the sockets 7 are snapped free from the studs 8 and thabot tom drops downwardly away from the top section to .-substantially the limit of its travel. In practice it is common to unite these stiffening arts directly to the leather or like mas teria l, as by means of lines of stitching 18. adapted for the reception of articles to be carried, said receptacle having separable means for holding said sections in either of two positions with respect to each other, said means comprising snap fasteners, one set of elements whereof are in duplicate, and corner pieces constituting shields for said folding portions hen the receptacle is eX- tended, said corner pieces carrying one of the elements of said snap fasteners.

An extensible receptacle having a top section, a bottom sect-ion, folding portions uniting said sections, said folding portions forming part of the walls of the receptacle when the latter is extended, means for protecting the edges of said folding portions when said receptacle is extended, and means, co-acting with said protecting means, for holding said receptacle sections in non-extended relationship.

8. An extensible receptacle having a top section, a bottom section, and folding portions uniting said sections, one at least of said sections being hollow and adapted for the reception of articles to be carried, corner pieces secured to one of said sections and extended therefrom to overlie the respective adjacent vertical edges of said other section when said receptacle is in non-extended form, said corner pieces being provided with snap fastener elements, and coacting snap fastener elements secured to the section other than that which carries said corner pieces, whereby said sections may be fastened together substantially contiguously.
